Thinking about changing title of your article on Triond or Blog? Already changed your pen name or website URL? Wondering what happens with the change in titles, urls or pen names in your articles or websites in the World Wide Web? Read on.

This post is in response to an article from friend Rhodora Bande titled: Four Reasons Why Facebook Likes Disappear (hope its title/URL won’t change in the future). Once you have read that, of the four reasons, except the third the rest are because of the change in URL that occurs when you change the title of your article on Triond, relocate an article from one website to another, profile page url change caused by change in your pen-name.

Similarly you should also note that changing title (most importantly URL) of an article changes it life totally. A URL is the life & blood of a web page much like our name is an identity for us.

In this WWW if you change the URL (identity) of a web page You will lose all the

  • previous backlinks,
  • page rank,
  • facebook likes,
  • social bookmarking votes/diggs/stumbles/tweets etc.,
  • and most importantly the daily traffic that had improved over the years… all will be reset to zero.

Just imagine what all things will be affected if you have changed your name (identity)…

  • Signature,
  • passport,
  • credit/debit card,
  • bank account
  • paypal account
  • job
  • driving license
  • and so on.

So that much important is your identity, that you will change only when you are willing take the trouble to update all the above things.

So decide your title the very first time as the final one and never think of changing it unless it is dumb/dead/poor in getting traffic or getting expected results. Alternatively you have to avoid doing anything (promotion, tweeting, bookmarking, linking, facebooking etc.) till you have finalized the title no matter how many days/weeks/months it may take.

As an example: all bonus articles that I have been writing in this month for Triond I am doing them in a rush to finish soon as only few days are left. That doesn’t mean I am dumping them for bonus. I want results for my efforts. But I need time to finalize title and also add more text if need be to improve their performance. Till then I am not touching those articles even if it takes two weeks before I get chance to update them. So no tweets, bookmarking efforts, etc.

Also another example is when I changed the url of my blog. I didn’t like the previous url which was a dumb acronym for a blog url. The new one too is an acronym but I like it and it sounds cool. I waited before changing for two months and listed all the places where I will lose backlinks and where I can fix them. So I worked on fixing for two months after I had changed url of my blog. The net result: it got page rank in the very first Google PR update after URL change! That’s how we should commit and decide before changing important things such as identities, titles and URLs.

I have changed some of the titles to my articles because I found that catchy titles do not work as well as informative ones. I had no idea, but that was years ago. Now I puzzle over it first, settle it then leave it. It is what it is.

You always do such a good job of covering a topic and educating the reader. Thanks.
