Obama Brings on The Open Source

With a step in the right direction, President Obama and the White House have happily embraced open source technology by picking Drupal as their CMS of choice.

Drupal is officially getting its rightful due by being picked by the White House administration and staff as the new content management of choice to run WhiteHouse.gov.  President Obama has been a staunch supporter of an open and transparent form of government and what better way to build on this platform than to support open source technology?

According to Dries Buytaert “Drupal’s flexibility and modularity enables organizations to build sites quickly at lower cost than most other systems. In other words, Drupal is a great match for the U.S. government”.

This writer has been a long-time supporter and user of the Drupal CMS program and is excited to see our local government picking up on the open source software bandwagon.

The U.S. government has actually utilized Drupal in other areas – the Department of Defense, the Department of Education and the Department of Commerce have all been using Drupal for some time.  The coup is in having the very top echelon of government sites deciding to go with the software as well.  You simply don’t get much higher than the official site for the White House.  This will send a huge message to other large agencies and government agencies world-wide that may be looking to switch their CMS programs to an open source technology.

Congratulations to Dries Buytaert and the Drupal community!
