Where Have All Our Facebook "Likes" Gone?

All the Facebook Likes on my articles and in some Triond writers’ articles have disappeared. Have our friends staged a massive clicking of Facebook "Unlike" against our articles?

This is unbelievable but all the Facebook Likes in all of my articles are gone. I was about to write an article with this title: “Edit the Title of Your Article and Your Facebook Likes Will Be Gone” when I suddenly noticed that all of my articles, inluding those whose titles I did not edit, do not reflect the Facebook Likes that my friends gave me.

I suddenly found myself revisiting my friends’ articles that I “Liked” and I saw that they, too, do not have the Facebook Likes. Where then have all our Facebook Likes gone? Does that mean our friends clicked the Unlike button in our articles?

Let us first take a look at this: Newsflavor says that as of December 16, 2010, four hundred sixty (460) Facebook users shared Ulsterman’s White House Insider: Hillary, 2012 and Michelle Obama’s Racism and 580 Facebook users shared Joesixpack’s Mother Gives Birth to 19 Pound Thanksgiving Baby yet both articles do not reflect a single Facebook “Like.”  With these figures, I am ruling out the possibility that there was a massive clicking of “Unlike” from Facebook users.  The former was published on December 3, 2010; the latter, November 30, 2010.

On the other hand, UmiNoor’s article Malaysia to Join Other Countries That Banned Facebook, shows 144 Facebook “Likes.” The said article was published on December 7, 2010.  Has there been a glitch in Triond’s system somewhere during the first week of the month? I was about to post this question at GetSatisfaction but then I realized that my Facebook “Likes” will no longer be restored even if the Triond staff answers my inquiry.

Lately, I have been aiming at Google as my primary source of traffic to my articles.  My top search phrases tell me that I am slowly getting there. I am looking forward to that day when I will no longer have to rely solely on my Facebook friends to read me.

Why, then, am I looking for the lost Facebook “Likes”?  Well, aside from the fact that one “Like” means one person putting a link of the article from his/her Facebook wall, those “Likes”are affirmations from Facebook users that the article is worth reading.  Furthermore, Facebook “Likes” mean a lot because they serve as decorations or badges to our articles.

I noticed this on one article and not on another. I wondered if it had to do with my article getting removed from Facebook. May be Triond has got another problem. This happens all the time on these sites.

  2. Rhodora Bande Says:

Hi Fornis, I checked on two of your articles that I “Liked.” I did not Unlike them nor removed them from my Facebook page. I strongly believe that there was a problem in Triond’s system. Thanks for the early comment.

  3. Fornis Says:

Thanks for posting an article on this just when I too noticed this strange thing. But I think this is related to latest issue on Triond servers. Udi Oz, one of the Triond CEOs, said that the server has changed for the Triond network sites and it takes time for page views to get reflected. That means even the facebook likes must have got refreshed/reset to zero. That is my guess based on what is happening behind Triond now. Let us see how it goes.

Good to know you are growing on search engine traffic. But I can’t think of any other way than massive quantity to succeed with search engines. Keep writing towards success!

  4. Fornis Says:

I never knew there was an Unlike button too on Facebook. Or did you just coin it? Unlike is that Bury button on Digg.com. I don’t like that. Youtube too has a dislike type button. Its time Triond adds a twitter button.

  5. Richie Montalbo Says:

I think this is a Facebook problem and not a Triond problem. It was reported that Facebook has an outage of 2.5 hours.

Fornis, the unlike button in Facebook is only available if you have liked an item first. If you have not liked an item, you can’t unlike it.

Sounds like a technical problem. Hope all your likes can be restored the soonest.

That we cannot tell, we can only hope that they’ll be able to fix that as soon as possible. Glad to read something from you again. I miss reading your craft. :)

  12. Brewed Coffee Says:

I haven’t noticed that. I will check after I read this :-) I wonder where the glitch is coming from this time. Triond or Facebook? Whatever happened to their interlinking? Hmmmm. A good point about the Google search. The article will thrive and you actually don’t need to put much effort to promotions

Oddly, I noticed this today as well, and i’m glad someone wrote about it TODAY so I know i’m not crazy or perhaps did something wrong and was banned. I just throw my like button for my entire domain (blog) on each page and well, it was at 236 and I was darn proud of it, but about an hour or so ago it reset to 1. Not 0, 1. And what is odd to me about that, is the ONE like was just myself and I happened to be logged into facebook. I have a fan group page and was started an ad to get folks to join it but I have since turned that off till this gets rectified. I workd for 3 months to get that 236 and yes Rhodora, those are like badges since that means that many REAL LIFE people like what you are doing on the web. I’ve been in business for almost 10 years and we did fine before facebook ‘likes’ came along, but they were a nice plush bonus and now with them gone I feel heartbroken a bit. Hope they come back.

a very well written article. i hope all your likes can be restored back.

  17. Sharif Ishnin Says:

This like/unlike phenomenon is creating more mystery than making our lives more positive. Why they created the unlike button is another big mystery for me. The glitches are back Rhodora. Its becoming an all year round affair. I hope they restore it back to health really soon. Cheers.

  18. Rhodora Bande Says:

Richie, thank you for providing the link to the Facebook’s note. I must agree with you then that it was a problem on Facebook’s site and not on Triond’s. David’s statement confirms that.

  19. Rhodora Bande Says:

To my Triond friends, thank you for reading and for leaving a comment. The FB Likes, as I’ve said, are like badges to our articles. If they are not restored, it really doesn’t matter. I’m now targeting the Google search as my primary source of traffic. Let’s keep on writing. :-)

  20. Rhodora Bande Says:

David, the highest likes I had was 86 on one article. I had one with 73 likes, one with 64, and another with 43. You are talking about 236 likes in your own blog. I don’t even know how to put the FB Like button in my own blog. I understand how you feel. Let’s just hope your followers will click the Like button again in your blog. Thank you for leaving a comment. Unfortunately, your 3 comments are not reflected in my dashboard; hence, I can’t delete the other two.

  21. Richie Montalbo Says:

Rhodora, you have a blog? PM me about it. Maybe I can help you put the FB button on it.

  22. Christine Ramsay Says:

That’s interesting. I hadn’t noticed that my likes had gone. I just thought fewer people were reading my posts. Thanks for letting us know.

    Christine

  23. Reena Says:

I am a Wordpress blogger and I also noticed that all my “Likes” have disappeared. I hope somebody can give us “the” answer as to why.

  24. Rhodora Bande Says:

Richie, I’ll work on the FB button in my blog some other time. Right now, I’m still working on the December special. I will PM you when I’m ready.

  25. Rhodora Bande Says:

Hi Reena, my FB Likes were restored yesterday. I hope, the “Likes” in your blog will also be restored ASAP. Thank you for leaving a comment.

  26. Louis Says:

I still am missing all the likes on my WordPress blog.

  27. nimbleful Says:

I noticed this missing facebook like phenomenon.. if its also on wordpress – maybe its a problem in facebook.. hmm!

  28. Richard Pirkle Says:

My like buttons are gone as well. like the majority of you guys I wore them as badges of honor as well. I own a small travel company firstclassfrequentflyer.com and had 117 likes. I hope mine get restored. What did you do to get them restored?

  29. Rhodora Bande Says:

Hi Richard, I didn’t do anything. I was actually ready to forget about them. I hope yours will be restored too.

  30. Amanda Says:

All my likes disappeared from my blog too. The code didn’t change, it must be an error on facebook side.

I see my old likes on my facebook profile and the url is same.

Only likes sent after the issue are showing now.

  31. Douggie Says:

I just Googled: “Why are my facebook “likes” disappearing and found this blog. I have a small pay-per-click ad for my facebook page which is set up to promote my book and film project. The ad works great, but the cost accumulates quickly. Every time I deactivate the ad, my “likes” start declining immediately. Why would people click “like” one day, then “unlike” the next??? Doesn’t make sense, but the result is that I enable my ad again to get the “likes” back up. I can’t help wonder if facebook is messing with my “likes” just so that I will start paying for the ad again. If they’re doing such a thing, that’s pretty bad, and someone should pay a penalty. Don’t mean to sound paranoid, but that dude who runs Google [facebook's parent co] looks and talks like a criminal mastermind.
