Everyone with a Gmail account might have found out by now about the Google Buzz, Google latest venture which is rumored to be a “Facebook-killer”. The search giant Google has recently come out with Buzz, in which Google has carefully married Gmail status updates and media-sharing technology in an attempt to get its share in the social networking world.
Many Gmail users I’ve talked to are ready to try out the Buzz but will it take over the popularity of Facebook and Twitter?
Buzz is not Google’s first attempt on becoming a force on the social web. However, its previous attempts like Orkut gained popularity only in some limited countries including Brazil and Wave was too abstract an idea. However, Google this time seems to be trying out some new strategy to make Buzz a household name like Facebook and to some extent, Twitter.

Buzz has mimicked the look of popular social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Because, Google has popularized Buzz with services such as Gmail, Buzz might quickly gain a large number of devotees. Gmail has 176 million users as of December according to a ComScore. This large user base will contribute to kick-start Buzz’s popularity.
However, already 400 million people are interconnected in Facebook which would make it difficult for Google to extend its social influence on the Web. Many critics have also reported of privacy issues in the first week of Buzz’s release. They also report that they “are not getting much more with Buzz” than they were getting with Facebook or Twitter.
Simply put, Buzz doesn’t seem to be a Facebook- or Twitter-killer.
