Brazil vs. Twitter

Not that long ago Twitter announced it will soon start  to censor tweets in certain countries if local law requires it. Twitter emphasized that the tweets will be blocked only in countries that will give an explicit instruction, and not for all users worldwide. And here already comes the first demand. CNN reports that the Brazilian government filed a lawsuit against Twitter social network and demand to suspend accounts of users that provide information on police checkpoints and speed detectors.
Lawsuit, filed last Monday, refers to cases in which users provide information on police ambushes and police checkpoints. The government bases its demands on the grounds that these warnings provided by users on the road about police activity endangers human life and property.
In addition, it is argued that beyond the negative impact of Twitter alerts on road accidents, users may also interrupt the work of fighting more serious crimes in the country, such as arms trafficking, car theft and drug trafficking. According to the report, The State intends to require approximately 290 thousand dollars for every day that Twitter does not prevent online traffic-offenders from disrupting the police work.

Police checkpoints? Brazil wants to clean up ahead of the 2014 World Cup. Police corruption is rampant in Brazil. The kingpin drug dealer recently arrested in Brazil said some months he made no money because he had to pay so much to the police. Who’s tweeting about the checkpoints? Possibly you can follow a Brazilian policeman on Twitter for a fee.
