When working to get backlinks, a good rule of thumb is to make the best use of your time by sticking to popular sites such as Stumbleupon & Digg, among others. You’ll need accounts with these sites and you should also share other good quality material so that you aren’t viewed as a spammer and banned.
While there are many sites that allow you to bookmark your articles, generally speaking, you make better use of your time by sticking to those that are established.
Generating Backlinks With a Blog or Website
A blog or a website can also be used to create backlinks. It is effective to create an actual article blurb, over merely pasting in an article URL, then linking to your article.
Another backlinking strategy involves including links in related articles, which offer readers additional information on a subject they are already interested in. For example, an article about how to make a white sauce that includes a link to a recipe for a cheese sauce would be right on target. Readers would likely be interested in learning how to make both sauces.

It pays to invest the effort to create content that attracts genuine interest because this fares better over the long-term. Adding photos, including resources, and formatting articles for readability can help to garner organic backlinks. When attention is paid to details, backlinking is more likely.
This is even more important in the wake of PANDA. Good quality, keyword optimized articles will do better over time, even with the ups and downs of algorithm updates.

I couldn’t agree more with your comments especially with all of the search ranking movement that has gone on and continues to go on with the Panda update.
Personally (thanks to information passed along to me), I’ll create a mini file (saved to an accessible spot) that contains the article URL, article title, a basic blurb about the article, and a list of tags that way it’s very easy and not overly time consuming to backlink to sites such as Digg, StumbleUpon, and the likes.

This is all good advise and very effective. One can achieve high placement on the search engines overnight. One cannot overlook commenting on blogs and articles as well.
Article directories can be a good source to send backlinks. As well as Do Follow sites, which currently carry more weight with the search engines.
For every article that you want to send traffic to, a good rule of thumb is to write at least two other related articles (with different slants) and using relevant keywords, point these to your original article.
