Many new search engines are popping up on the web and challenging Google’s search engine dominance. According to Hitwise, a source, “Google is the dominant search engine with around 72 percent of U.S. online searches and its percentages are much higher in other parts of the world.” Of all three major search engines Google, Yahoo! and MSN, Google provides the most traffic for certain keywords.

There have been many search engines before Google and now many new ones are popping up on the web. Some of the new search engines are: Cuil, Hakia, Kosmix, OneRiot, Searchme, Twine, Topsy, TweetMeme and Wolfram Alpha. Each of these are different, making your web search more personal, more visual, or connecting your search to new social networks like FaceBook and Twitter.
WOLFRAM ALPHA
Wolfram Alpha is a computational, knowledge engine and is thought by some as possibly the most likely candidate to give Google some serious competition because it can create information rather than just read/present content already on the web, which is something Google can not do. I believe students will love this search engine because it does work for you, for example, type in your birthday and you will be amazed at the results.
BING
Bing is a new search engine from Microsoft, which is very similar to Google in many ways, but different. Bing presents results in a more pleasing arrangement. It gives you a preview button for each listing and related searches and your search history on the left hand side.
Bing’s home page is quite appealing and only has a search box on it so you are not distracted with other news listings like on MSN and Yahoo! Besides its superior search results, one of the main reasons for Google’s success has been its simplicity. “Keep it simple and you may just be able to compete.”
SEARCHME
Searchme is a visual search, much like the iTunes interface, where you can shuffle through screenshots of webpages instead of a list of links. Searchme claims to be the first multimedia search engine; it has been around for a few years but is not widely known to web users.
There are those who claim that using Searchme is a hundred times more enjoyable than using Google Search or Bing because information can be found without clicking through so many displayed sites. The web is turning into a more interactive multimedia operation, and visual search will most likely always win out over text searches.
Unfortunately, at the time of writing this article, the Searchme site has been taken offline. It is being sold. The following is the message that you will see if you Google it: The world’s leading visual search engine has gone offline. We are selling our Intellectual Property!
Experts claim the thing that gives Google all its revenue is Text ads, which may work against it – everyone dislikes advertising, no matter what form it takes. This is especially true among the younger computer savvy crowd using such sites as the Google owned YouTube, where Google has nearly obliterated the videos with its ads.
Google is a smart company with tons of resources. It keeps morphing and changing as necessary with the times, quickly adapting to new features as our usage of the web keeps changing. Google has perfected the art of staying one step ahead of the competition.

Even with all these new search engines vying for a place in the market, I think Google has a strong hold on its market, i.e. the whole world: I mean who doesn’t use ‘Google’ as a verb in their everyday life!

Very informative article. Although, these competitors are gaining some ground, Google is so widely used it has a firm seat in its position and I can’t see it being ousted anytime soon. Great article, Wess.
