Well, it’s not the Google Search Engine itself that is asking the question "why do I fart so much" it is the users of the search engine. You would not believe just how many there are in the world who search Google to know why they fart so much and the nonsense does not stop there. Read on to find out more!
At the very end of the last month, Mark Gordon Brown published an article called ‘Google Search Engines Likes Farts’. It is an article looking at how the Google search engine offers up alternative spellings if they think you have made a mistake. Having typed a sentence in with the word part, the Google search engine asked ‘Did You Mean: ‘fart’. Having read that article, it got me thinking about what people in the world were searching for and just how many of them must be searching for things to do with farts.

On the 15th of February 2009, I published an article on Triond called ‘10 Things You Didn’t Need To Know About Farts’. It has so far been, by and far, my most viewed article and it still picks up numerous views every single day. If someone had asked, prior to the publication of that, if I thought an article on farts would be popular I would have probably said no. However, not only has it proved to be a popular article it has proved to be the most popular article I have published on-line.
So what makes an article on farts so popular?
Popular articles tend to be ones that people are interested in. The truth of the matter is that there are a ridiculous number of people searching on-line for anything, and everything, to do with farts. It would appear that a lot of people are interested in farts, whether that be their own or the fart of someone else.
Don’t believe me? Just take a look at the following list of ‘Top Search Phrases’ that show on my Dashboard at Triond.
- why do I fart so much
- fart facts
- why am I farting so much
- holding in farts
- is farting good for you
- facts on farts
- interesting facts about farts
- how many times a day do people fart
- how many times a day should you fart
- farting facts
- I fart too much
- What does too much farting mean
- is holding farts in bad for you
- trouble farting
It doesn’t even stop there! There are many more ‘Top Search Phrases’ that appear in the list, albeit pretty much differing variations of the above. These are not just phrases that one or two people a month are searching for, most of these number into the hundreds (and some even more!) of unique visitors that have searched those phrases and then been taken to something I have written about farts.
And those are just from Google, so it would appear that it is not only the Google Search Engine that likes farts but a lot of people who use Google to search for things like farts also.

Will writing about farts guarantee the popularity of the article?
I don’t think that there are any guarantees when it comes to writing, especially not when it is on-line. Anything that is written on-line will go into direct competition with everything else that has been written on the same subject. With that in mind, the chances of guaranteeing popularity just by writing about a popular subject is relatively low. An article about farts may well become popular as there are a lot of people searching on that subject, but it might just as well not become popular because there is so much other stuff out there on the topic.
The funniest thing someone has searched for about farts?
Not really sure if this could be classed as funny, in the traditional way, but the one search phrase that really stood out was,
- why does my mom fart so much
In the last 30 days, 17 unique people have typed that phrase into a Google search and have opened my article about farts. I wonder what their reasons for doing so were. No, on second thoughts I probably don’t want to know!
