These search engines include Google, which has the lion’s share of the market, Yahoo and Bing, which follow closely behind, and newer search engines such as Zanran.

Sites with a number of backlinks from other sites, such as social media sites, pointing to them, are regarded as influential, trusted sources on the subject matter, and are given higher ranking. Most persons who search for information about a topic by entering a key phrase or search term on the internet, only click on the first 10 results they see, if they even click on that many.

Google has a number of recommendations for getting backlinks legitimately on the internet, so that over time, you can get more traffic to your blog, website or articles.

Make Your Content Entertaining

Humorous content, and other kinds of content that have a high entertainment value are likely to be passed around on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Jaiku. The new Google algorithm, known as Google Panda, or the Farmer update, pays a lot of attention to whether content is being shared on social media sites.

Adding video and photos to your content and using humor can help to make your content more entertaining.

Currently, many of the sites that appear on page 1 for a particular search phrase are sites that have been shared on a number of different social media.

Give Answers to Questions your Readers Might Have

Other people are more likely to link back to your website, blog, YouTube video or other online content if it helps them solve their problems or addresses issues that they have.

Check out forums related to the topics you write in, to find out what kinds of problems people who search the Internet are having and design online content that addresses their issues. Pay attention to what is popular on social networks such as Twitter and Jaiku.
