Why you need a business web-site and how to go about it.

In the 21st century, even the smallest businesses should have web-sites. Here are the reasons why: Over 90% of all households in America have some form of internet connection, whether it be high speed, broadband or dial-up. Out of this 90%, 65% of these households has someone who researches products and services they intend to purchase, by checking web-sites online. You want one of those web-sites to be yours.

When you’ve decided you need a web-site, the next question is, will you put the web-site up yourself or hire a professional? The following information may help you decide.

 Making Your Own Web Site

  1.   You will need a domain name. Domain names can be bought for $10.00 per year. The name should reflect your business name, if it’s available or a word to identify your products.
  2. Pick a company to host your web-site. A host company puts your web-site on their server, where people can see it.  A monthly fee is charged for this. Fees can range from $3.00 to $15.00 plus per month. Make sure that your hosting company has the necessary megabytes (mb) to host your web-site. An average status page is approximately one tenth of a megabyte. Check that the bandwidth size is ample. Bandwidth is measured in megabyte (mb) or gigabyte (gb). The higher the bandwidth, the more visitors can be shown your site. Some hosting companies offer web-site builders, to help you install the features you want to have on your web-site. Some features are common to web-sites and you will probably want to utilize them. They are the guestbook, the visitor counter, forums and invite pages. Building your web-site with a web-site builder is much easier than using the coded language of HTML.
  3.  There are several free web-site builder’s, such as MySite and Freewebs or you can look online for others. If you are more experienced or daring, you can buy software, such as, Frontpage or Dreamweaver to help you build your web-site.

  Hiring A Professional

This may be the best way to go, if you do not have the time or experience to build your own web-site. A professional does this for a living and can give you special features, that web-site builders alone, cannot offer.

A professional will discuss your ideas for a web-site with you and offer any features they think will be appropriate to your business.

An experienced professional will build a quality web-site, buy and set-up the domain name and put the web-site on a server for you. Most will update the web-site on a weekly basis.

The price of hiring a professional web-site designer can vary region by region and depends on how extensive your web-site will be. Prices can range from a few hundred dollars into the thousands.

Either way, do it yourself or hiring a professional, businesses that have web-sites receive more market exposure. That market exposure can turn into dollars for your business.
