Write Rubbish, I Delete It

Web Talk

Here is a (hopefully) polite rant about all of those people there who take ultimate pleasure in getting away with anything through messages and comments in order to make themselves more wiser or popular. Wise up!

In a place like Triond, where writers can contact each other at literally the click of a button, it is very easy for people to share their views and ideas at the click of a button too. But recently I’ve noticed a growing trend. Because of this certain ‘distance’ called the internet, people feel like they can get away with ANYTHING!

So you are unclear about what I’m saying?

Well, for starters, spam. People message me to add them as friends, people message me to comment on their work, people message me the links to their work and some people go to the extent to paste their entire article on a message! These are the writers who are far too desperate to get themselves noticed. Just because they no that I won’t scream at them for spamming my inbox with a bunch of stuff I know I’m not going to look at, they think they can get away with filling my inbox with a bunch of rubbish. I’m pretty sure each and every one of you reading this has experienced some sort of ‘writer’s violence’ as I like to call these messages. As much as it kills me to waste like 10 seconds of my life reading their petty request, I enjoy nothing more than deleting their message. Okay, if they leave a comment saying I’m a good writer or they like the stuff I write, then I take a while to look at what they have on offer, but those who just get straight to the point and have no consideration for the amount of pain I go through to make my articles noticed, they don’t have my sympathy. So basically, they write rubbish, I delete it.

Another example of this ‘pathetic persuasion’ is through comments on my articles. Every one loves comments. Especially me! I love getting comments as much as I love writing them. A comment is enough to make me happy. But then, it kills me when some one leaves me a referral to join their site or to check out their links. The happiness caused by receiving the comment is drowned instantly. So what do I do? I delete it. I don’t have to waste valuable internet space to make room for their comments that just say ‘Hi! Read my articles…yada yada yada’ I don’t enjoy removing comments but for these, I don’t mind sacrificing one comment for the sake of my beliefs on these kinds of people. Who cares about one comment but I won’t support anyone who won’t work hard enough to claw their way in.

The third example is incredibly critical people. They will take every single opportunity to leave a couple of expletives or correct you in what you’ve said in your article. I have made mistakes when it comes to facts in my articles before. I admit it! But those mistakes aren’t that massive that they may disturb these critical people’s incredibly pristine lives. Tell me where I’m wrong with appropriate ideas or facts to back your claim up. If you completely disagree with what I’m saying, say it. But what annoys me is those people swearing at my article, or saying it is ‘stupid’ or saying that the writer is ‘bad and hasn’t researched it’. But anyway, what do I do? I delete these overly critical comments. Saying that I’m ‘bad’ or my article is ‘stupid’ or that I ‘haven’t researched it’ angers me because at least I’ve left them a teensy iota of my knowledge that they probably didn’t know before but if that isn’t enough to suffice their encyclopaedic brain, then God save the Queen! Constructive criticism won’t kill you, folks! A good example of a comment that corrected me on a fact is the last comment in this article. I purposely didn’t delete it because I want to let my other viewers know I went wrong. Even though the comment sort of contradicts its own point in relation to my article, I still gave the reader the benefit of doubt and I kept his comment.

Okay, we’ve all had these bad habits at some point. I know I’ve voiced my opinion sometimes where I must have been overly critical, I’m sorry I did that. But the point is, I learn! I hate spamming anyone with silly messages to ‘view my work’ because I aim to be in the likes of Ruby Hawk, Guy Hogan etc. honestly. I haven’t reached there yet but when I do, I want to be proud of myself that I did it without writing rubbish in people’s inboxes and articles trying to ‘promote myself’. I have occasionally left an article that I might want someone to read and I appreciate it when an author I know leaves a link for me to read especially if I know and respect them. That is perfectly acceptable.

So here is one to all of you who indulge in this petty persuasion and bask in the glory of your success, write rubbish to me, I delete it.

Straight to the point and hammering the issue down. I like the way you wrote this. I did feel this seeping through and I’m glad someone like you wrote about it, because it is true.

When you get a comment that says “Great article…now please visit me at …. and …..” What does that tell you? It tells you that the person hasn’t put any effort into reading your work and is there just to advertise himself. From POV, it seems selfish and like you described it – “Desperate”

Spamming is also a pain. I don’t get why people do it. ONE – it doesn’t significantly increase the amount of views you get (if any).

TWO – it crumbles your reputation on Triond. If you’re known to be a spammer, you’ll find difficulty getting reviews on Triond.

Over all, I agree with all your points Atikin. Wonderful article! Spot on.

    2 thumbs up.

  2. papaleng Says:

Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts. Don’t worry you’re not alone witn your crusade. I too, do the same thing.

  3. Mythili Kannan Says:

You are not alone Atikin, I get my inbox full almost all days, by which I sometime miss to read mails from my friends :(

  4. athena goodlight Says:

I felt your irritation maxed out. Though this is a reality we writers have to face regularly, spammers have to face their spam recipients’ wrath in one way or another, too. Good write up!

  5. martie Says:

Valuable points. I would like to say though that personally when I made a mistake as to fact even a small one I don’t mind when people point it out. Though I much perfer they send me an email to do so.

I then do a bit more reseach and correct the article if they are right.

Leaving those kind of comments in the comment section is too much like scolding instead of helping, to suit me.

  6. Darla Smith Says:

I can understand how you feel. I get a lot of spam in my inbox too. I usually have to delete two or three spam messages a day.

  7. theSVK Says:

good points atikin but i didn’t know these things happen in triond, may be because of my still newbie status in triond, i do not get messages to read peoples articles yet. criticism is good as per it enriches the idea, not try to destroy it. you can differ but your different opinion can be put forward in a much polite manner without using slangs.

  8. Papa Sparks Says:

I read people’s posts here and comment accordingly; if they cannot return the favor I delete them. It’s that simple. If one cannot support other writers here, then one has no business here.

  9. Christine Ramsay Says:

I have had a lot of spammers too. I didn’t realise messages could be deleted like comments. Well done for speaking out.

    Christine

  10. Yovita Siswati Says:

Good points! I understand your feeling. I sometimes received spam messages too and have to delete some messages per day.

  11. Agnes Chin Says:

Good that I have not received this kind of comments in my articles but I always see a lot of “review my site” kind of thingy in other writers comments field like what you mentioned.

Sadly I do receive a lot of other spam mails coming through my emails.

Great that you brought this up!

  12. emmahaynes Says:

Great piece, HATE the spammers! Oh and I looked at the comment of the humanzee article…ouch! He could have messaged you to point it out! No need to publicly humiliate you!
Ruby Hawk is my hero too :D

    *Hugs*

  13. Lostash Says:

Good for you! Spammers take note…..we ALL feel the same!

  14. Zunairah Says:

I agree…some people are really critical and leaves us thinking for long!!

  15. Guy Hogan Says:

Just keep moving forward like I know you will.

  16. PR Mace Says:

Thank you for sharing this, I agree with you 100%. I hate messages to read me and I have added you as a friend but I have never seen a comment on my work. I love my Triond friends but I have learned to network my posts and I don’t need them to make money. I need my Triond friends for support, good comments and friendship. I love my true Triond friends of which you my dear have earned a place.

  17. Ben Pearce Says:

Fair enough to ! It can be extremely frustrating. Great article, this deserves its place on the hot content list, keep up the good work :)

  18. valli Says:

I can understand your feelings, but you are not alone.

  19. Uma Shankari Says:

    Atikin,
This is just to let you know I have read the article. Somehow I am unable to write, I-know-this-kind, it-happens. I do beg to differ etc, since i don’t know how to explain in this small space. So I just record to state: I beg to differ. No offence or any other questionable intent on my part, though.

  20. Lily River Says:

I have only made 2.06 since last year and have been wondering what I have done wrong, but on the contrary I love to write and hope to publish a book so money isn’t everything. I can’t stand spam either!

  21. willtwinny Says:

    Excellent article as usual!
I am lucky as I haven’t received any spam yet, but hopefully when people read your article it may reduce the amount of spam anyone gets!

    Keep up the good work!

  22. thestickman Says:

Well said. I am fortunate I guess; I don’t get many spammy requests on my PM-box. Those that I do, -let ‘em live in ignorance. I ‘block them’ and they can never contact me again.

    Best!
    -thestickman

  23. CA Johnson Says:

I agree with you Atikin. I was sitting at my computer applauding you as I was reading your article. I have had spam in my inbox like that too and I delete it too. It is a shame that some people insist on flooding inboxes with spam.

  24. r4nd0m Says:

hmm well I am not popular enough to say I agree, but I do understand “people who want to be famous” they annoy you till you cave or do something you will regret

  25. deep blue Says:

Patience is a virtue. Most of us just seem too eager to be more popular than J.R.R. Tolkien or Emily Dickinson that they wouldn’t risk a lifetime waiting to be noticed by abusing the wonders of the internet at the push of a button. The thing is the message is rubbish. I have your thoughts well understood Atikin. Someone’s got to do a wise approach with less intimidation I guess.

  26. sunshine926 Says:

Great article. I totally agree with you on this article. I myself can’t stand when people send me messages to comment on their work. That is annoying and I don’t recall ever emailing anyone with that. As for writers pasting their entire article on your page, that is very annoying as well. Just block them and I can honestly say that it happened to me and the problem has been solved. Regarding people that criticize others work, they are just a bunch of haters. Don’t pay attention to those comments. just ignore them or delete their comments. The only way that some people can make themselves good is by putting others down. let it go through one ear and out the next. Success doesn’t happen over night for anyone. It entails a lot of sacrifice, determination, drive, motivation and there are times that you will fail over and over again but that is the only way you will become successful. marlene

  27. Goodselfme Says:

I used to tell the new people through a private email that I have a policy “YOU READ MINE,I READ YOURS’.Now I just delete like you do.
Your voice says my thoughts too. No one is perfect. Not even the ones who critisize others for small or large mistakes. There is no need to condemn. If someone does not like what they read, JUST DON’T RETURN to read again. Send the person some help instead of a bad bunch of garbage. And never come back.
Friends mean different things to different people. YOu can see your real friends, when you need them. See them here on your article, my friend!
This won’t be the end of it, so get strapped in for the long haul. Keep your focus since that is exactly what the garbage throwers want you to lose. I am glad you could get this out and hope it reaches the ones who need to read it.

  28. Diverseblogger Says:

Very true! I can deff relate! there is someone who is not even a member of triond yet they comment on my work. Also there are quite a few people who flood the mailbox and it can become too much. great write

  29. WriteEditSeek Says:

Wow, I’ve only seen the sweet, congenial Atikin. LOL, I love the spunky Atikin, too! You tell us like it is! :) I love your bluntness. You’re fabulous and so perceptive for how young you are. Thankfully, I haven’t been receiving as much “read my article” spam lately. Cass gave me some good advice to spam out my article about Triond etiquette when I do get inbox spam. That’s been fun the few times I’ve done it. I sort of look forward to spam now. :) Gotta make it fun somehow, you know? I also love the delete key. I have to say 99.9% of the comments I’ve received are positive and supportive. The other .1% I delete without a second thought.

  30. Joshua Miguel Says:

I agree with you particularly with your third example – the critical people.

  31. JoshuaD Says:

I don’t pay any attention to it.

  32. writing4angels Says:

    very honestly written.

  33. Lucas DiƩ Says:

:D most enjoyable, you should get annoyed more often, it makes very good reading …

I do one thing differently from you, though, I leave stupid comments for later readers to read, as I guess my readers will also see the stupidity of a comment and will remember the name of that person … sort of getting back at the commenter by doing nothing …

  34. Payge Says:

Can relate to what you said and they dont even read my work in return. And if I wanted to join a new writing site,I would without getting my box full of useless invitations.I use my delete buton when I have to on the negative comments and some of them dont even belong to Triond. But a fantastic article and it expressed what us writers face very well.

  35. Louie Jerome Says:

I agree with Stickman, if I don’t fancy following up the spammy type messages I just block the senders so they can’t do it again.

In the comments box I remove stuff that annoys me but leave the stupid remarks as Lucas Die says, it makes the writer look stupid to other commenters and that amuses me!

  36. chitragopi Says:

I was worried at what to do with all the spam in my inbox. I thought I was the only victim! A good revelation. Pain seems to get reduced when you know there are fellow sufferers.

  37. Jane Jane Says:

I have those who post their entire article on their messages.

  38. amytal Says:

wooow thats so true. I like your article.

  39. Joe Poniatowski Says:

I’ll delete the spam, but leave the rest. Most of the real caustic attacks are self-defeating because they’re usually left by some anonymous chicken, and they are often written with terrible grammar and spelling plus an obvious lack of understanding of the topic at hand. Thus, I leave them for others to ridicule. If the language is really obscene, then I might delete it.
    Thanks for sharing your frustrations.

  40. Joe Poniatowski Says:

Well, I commented before I read everyone else’s comments, and now realize I basically repeated what Louie Jerome said.

  41. Leonardo davinci Evans Says:

I value your insight on the matter.

  42. Sourav Says:

This happens… and I think it’s difficult to stop it. Every one wants get views and earn some money here… so it’s obvious you will some shameless promotion…

  43. wmasters Says:

Great article. Check out my work at…

Or maybe not. I agree completely, worthless comments and commenting just to promote your own work is tiresome. That said, if it’s a related topic then I might leave the comment or even look to see what they have to say.

  44. kamlesh786 Says:

    ya some critical people exists

  45. jacksangel Says:

Very direct and well written. I agree some critsism is a way of the writer but don’t say someone is bad, rather give a pointer or two. At least that is what I like when someone thinks I have writen something wrong.

  46. Adam Henry Sears Says:

    Hi, Atikin, how are you?

This is a well-put and upfront opinion on the profitless spamming that occurs. I get a lot of that kind of thing too. Sometimes, I answer, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I just reply with: sure, but check out mine too will ya?

I liked this one (I laughed a couple of times), but I found it too opinionated, and you forgot to mention that if people want readers then they have to read too.

Thanks for sharing, and have a good day.

  47. JohnDaOne Says:

Brilliant article, wish I was such a good writer, admittedly I’m mostly going to be adding video’s and guides, mostly against monopolists, most of whom are Microsoft…

But anyway, back to the point, I, as being new to this site, thankfully haven’t received any Spam, but I know what you mean by annoying Spam, just in general.

One thing I don’t understand is, these spammers must not think things through, spammers LOOSE views, they don’t GAIN them, DUH!!! get it through your spamming heads…

  48. yvonnerobert Says:

I’m still getting used to triond.com. So, tell me you I can delete a comment. I didn’t even know this feature was an option. I agree with your frustration. And what I mostly dislike are those derogatory comments that other writers make about somebody’s article.

  49. Sashya Says:

Not a big deal, I get awful comments all the time but I just ignore them. If you stress yourself over them, then you will have grey hair before you know it. The internet is full of talented and crazy people; people who sit in forums or wait for an article to criticize it. Those people need attention so I just do not give it to them. I do what you do, DELETE IT. Not to worry, you are not alone. Just don’t pay idiots any mind because if you look at their work, you can see that they write mostly poems that has no lyric or rhythm.

  50. Ruby Hawk Says:

Atikin, girl you are heated up. I agree with you. I just delete all the junk mail. Do you guys get mail asking for money? For me that takes the cake. I don’t respond to that kind of thing period. I think some people just don’t understand what we are about here on Triond. Don’t let the unlovely get to you, continue to delete the junk.Thank you for mentioning my name. You are a sweet girl.I wouldn’t mind having another granddaughter just like you.

  51. littlekid137 Says:

    OMGOMGOMG READ MYYYYY WORK!!!!!!!

Haha just kidding. good article. I hate when people do this.

  52. James Beattie Morison Says:

I sometimes worry where promotion leaves off and spamming begins.

Personally, I haven’t had much of a problem, but I can certainly appreciate your feelings. Some years ago I would 200 to 300 spam e-mails a day at work.

  53. Joe Dorish Says:

LOL Glancing at the people who commented here I see at least one person who recently spammed me to “please read and comment on my work”. My response was the same as always – read and leave some comments on my work first. The person replied OK sure but has done nothing of the sort which is par for the course.

  54. hell123 Says:

i hate spam messages though, but maybe thats a bit extreme though

  55. Paige R Dunn Says:

Wonderful write! You hit the nail on the head!

  56. DeborahLawwill Says:

I completely understand the frustration of being spammed. While you and I may have totally different definitions of spam, I still think there is a time and a place for everything. Promoting oneself on someone else’s page, facebook wall, triond inbox, email inbox (unless they requested a newsletter) is not appropriate. However on some sites it’s quite common and widely accepted such as eHow and twitter is lovely for promoting as people can choose whether or not they’d like to see your updates. Basically, when in Rome do as the Romans do. I’m happy to see that Triond is one of those sites where it’s considered unacceptable. It’s bad enough the way they make ads nowadays. You can’t move your mouse the wrong way without some annoying infomercial taking over your browser. Ugh!

Anyways, great article. I hope you don’t mind if I add you as a friend.

  57. Miss E Says:

Good article – it is such a pain – and waste of time.

  58. TammyFSmithCaldwell Says:

Great Article! Honestly that is one of the reasons I don\’t reply much, because when I do I am flooded with spam. The only time I mention to others about my writing outside of Triond is if I am asked. I like reading the replies of others, and it is frustrating to see so many that spam on the articles of others. Not only is it frustrating, but it is rude, and I it does nothing to encouraged reading their material.

  59. TammyFSmithCaldwell Says:

Wow that is weird. My reply is not how it was copied and pasted from my program. Ah Well..You guys know what I mean…LOL…

  60. Slither Says:

Wonderful article straight to the point!

  61. paramarora Says:

    Excellent Article.

  62. Mike Crowl Says:

You say you can delete comments…how do you do this?

  63. lillyrose Says:

nice work! and judging how long it took me to get to the bottom of your comments, I am not on my own in thinking that. I bet you feel so much better having got that of your chest! x

  64. BeatsMe Says:

Wow. I’m glad I don’t have to deal with such comments. But spamming, I often experience them. I guess that’s the price you get when you write intriguing articles.

  65. Judy Sheldon Says:

I welcome constructive criticism but feel it belongs in my inbox. Those who send me their web site addresses and urls as comments get deleted. Those who send comments containing profanity and name calling also get deleted. Unfortunately I write at two other sites which do not have that luxury.

This is an excellent write and I concur. Take care & God bless!

  66. Starpisces Says:

So there are really people who are doing these, how disappointing, I think I will just ignore them. I like friends who are sincere, we can share our views and encourage one another, even we have never met, the feeling is great, people who make friends or do things with motive, the friendship will not last….
    Thanks for sharing (liked it).

  67. Jane Benitez Says:

Enjoyed your article and glad to see you express yourself with some spunk. Sounds like you can take care of yourself.
