Why Should Internet Be Regulated?

A small text about why should internet be regulated.

In the recent years, many have complained that the different government of the world have taken away our rights and liberties, primarly since the events that took place in New York. Some of those bring up the New World Order argument, or any other non-sensical conspiracy theories about people wanting us to be slaves. Don’t get me wrong, I am against the actions of laws such as the PATRIOT ACT, but sometimes, these people complaining about the fact that they have less liberties are often those that easily explains why we should take some away, or at least, control them.

Extremist right-wing argue that everyone should be able to bear any kind of gun, because it is not the gun that kills someone, but man itself. This argument is a double-sliced one for them. Man is always part of the equation, and like most of the time, it is that part that brings everything down. When faced to incredible anger, a man with a gun is more likely to end up in a bloodbath than someone with a knife or any other kind of weapon. Such powerful weapon should be regulated in a way to please the right-wing and actually assure the nation is safe.

It always comes down to regulation. Let the people free, but make sure they don’t act stupid with their liberties. This brings me to one of the Holy Grail of the XXth century, and the future of our world, the Internet. As it became more and more common in households and workplaces, many websites have appeared, such as Youtube, Facebook and MySpace, letting people stay in touch and express who they are, what they believe is right. However, with these websites, allowing people to comment in a free manner have come hate and unjustified anger. This freedom of speech that people want to preserve on the Internet, is actually why we should regulate the Internet. How common it is to encounter people arguing in a way they certainly wouldn’t in real life. Certainly, some arguments can be harsh, but arguing to the point of calling each other names for small detail about a band of someone has become the major problem of the internet. Because even though some can say that they’re only strong behind the screen but not in real life, we must not forget the impact these people get from acting that way. By thinking they are superior, they will gradually develop an unjustified hate of everything in society.

Also, by being recurrent, these people help to promote those stereotypes we have from the world around us. As an example, in an argument between Canada and the United States, it can start with insults about hockey and bush, but it often ends with the one from the United States saying “Well stfu, we can bomb you off the map”. This comment, even though probably true, reflects how our society have lowered it’s intelligence. Internet was suppose to bring knowledge to everyone, yet, it lacks of that for now. United States needs Canada’s water. Another one, United Statians (America is a continent, not a country) telling a French that “if it wasn’t because of us, you’d still be Nazi today”. May I remember them that if it wasn’t from the help of the French, the United States would still be singing God Saved the Queen.

The repetitive insults, the superiority complex some seem to acquire on the net are the primary reasons we should regulate internet, especially chat.

People think that Internet is the perfect anonymous land, yet, we should make sure in the future these people that represent the plague of the net get punished in the real life, because although only a virtual world, internet is part of our society, that we like it, or not.
