Web Talk

This is whats going to happen in a couple of years…

It’s no secret then- it’s already happening. mobile devices are today at the centre of major technological advancements we see around us. most service providers (such as web services, telecom services and so on), today focus on providing content specifically tailored to mobile to to mobile devices such as net-books, smart phones, mobile phones, and so on. as these mobile devices become increasingly powerful, with computer-like processors, memory and resident applications, they are becoming a more important part of our daily lives.

The future lies not just in traditional PC-to-PC communications. instead, it will include the prevalent use of mobile devices. that is one reason why Etisalat has finally decided to launch Apple’s iPhone 3G after months of contemplation.

the explosion in devices such as cell phones, PDA’s, and other wireless gadgets connected to the web, is radically changing the technology industry. i call this phenomenon the “here web”, because the Internet is always here, and you can access it through a device you always carry.

Due to this “here web phenomenon, i see the development activity on the current reigning platform – the PC – is starting to stagnate. one could say that Google might replace Microsoft at some point, with the, with the web as a platform. in fact, many applications are now available online, and many developers are now concentrating more on developing applications for mobile devices.

At a technology demonstration event, which was held recently in California, USA, a whole bunch of application developers (from start ups and established companies) showcased technologies aimed at mobile devices.at the event, a company called promptu systems, demonstrated its ShoutOUT software which allows users to send SMS by reading out loud to the phone which would be converted to text and sent.

However mobile devices would be able to do more in the next few years. your phone for instance will be smart about your situation and alert you when something needs your attention. this is already happening today- eBay can text you when you’ve been outbid, and alert services (such as Google  News) can deliver news, sports, or stock updates to you. in the future these applications will get smarter, patiently monitoring your personalised preferences (which will be stored in the network cloud) and delivering only the information. you desire.

According to google- one of the largest developers of web- based applications for mobile devices, your mobile phone for instance could also use its arsenal of sensors to understand your situation and provide you information that might be useful. for instance, do you really want to buy the plasma TV you are looking at? your phone with its GPS and compass, knows what you are looking at, so it can tell you before you even ask, in addition to what brand it is and the accessories that comes with it.all this is and much more is possible in new and interesting ways. all this and much more are possible- only time will tell how best these features are put to use.
