Comment: A written note intended as an explanation, illustration, or criticism of a passage in a book or other writing; an annotation.
Although I have only been a
Triond
member for a short time, it has quickly become part of my daily routine. Each day I have my morning coffee while I check how my content is doing and read all of the new and interesting articles.
Triond has provided me not only with a place where I can share my own creativity and thoughts, but a place where I can read about what other members think is interesting .
I have to admit that some of the articles that I have read are much more appealing to me than others, but that all boils down to taste. Yes, we would all like our content to do well, but it is unreasonable for even the most popular writers to expect that their content will be enjoyed by all. But my question is : what exactly is the comment section for ?
I spent nearly an entire day reading comments left on some of the most popular content, and was totally appalled by some of the things I read.
For the most part the comments were positive and sometimes helpful. Others were left strictly for the sake of having something mean or rude to say.
In the
“Go Bananas”
article, someone actually felt it necessary to comment that bananas could be used as a sexual aid.. While another thought it might be fun to buy expensive beer and pour it on “poor people” Others just seemed to think it great fun to pick apart the articles and to argue with other commenters over the smallest details.
The
American Heritage Dictionary
gives the following as a definition of the word comment: A written note intended as an explanation, illustration, or criticism of a passage in a book or other writing; an annotation. Nowhere does it mention anything about vulgarity, ignorance or condescension.
I think that most would agree that while we are entitled to free speech, it should not be used to purposely hurt or ridicule others.

The comments section is great.
Unfortunately there will always be people that will use it for making nasty irrelevant comments.
My advice – JUST IGNORE THEM!

I agree with Jason D. Rude commenters will never go away. Ignoring them is about all we really can do but, when someone is exceptionally rude I hit the spam button on my comment page. This way other readers won’t be offended and I am the only one who has to look at it.
Good article lanne.

I agree, I love when I get a comment on my work. Rude people that find it as a way to just leave their mark, whether it is talking about the article or not are just ridiculous. Thanks for this informative article, it is well written.

Honestly, I am a bit surprised that I found almost no sarcastic and rude comments so far in Triond articles I happen to read. If you write so many articles elsewhere or even post something in a forum, chances are one or two rude fellow is going to visit and throw rude comments for the sake of rudeness.
The sad part is the fact that the comments usually show the commentator’s own lack of knowledge and shallow understanding of the topic being presented.
