Using Stumble Upon as Nature Intended

Web Talk

A blog that started life as a comment on a forum thread – read and think about the good old days!!

Stumble upon is intended for people to randomly “stumble” from site to site and think “ooh, that site is cool/useful/funny” I’ll thumbs it up (that tells SU to add more of those type of sites to your next “random” mix)

Next time you click the stumble button 100 times, you will see more of the type of sites that you “thumbs up” as you spend hours stumbling your way through the web!!

When you find a site/page/pic that you really, really like you can share it with your friends (90 in my case) then you “share” it, and add a little message like “I have discovered this amazing site/page/pic about… take a look”. They may then share this with their friends (10, 20, 6, 225, 72 etc – none of whom are the same as yours!!) and the site/page/pic you found goes viral.

Then along came a Trionder – stumbling stuff with NO randomness at all, they stumble their own stuff and ask for clicks and share it loads of time with friends who have the same friends (an incestuous, largely annoying activity with stumbling that does not share “the best of the web with the best of my friends” but my average stuff with people who have already seen it!!)

And guess what – “stumble upon” hate this as much as you do – and will get to the point when they ban you and ban the site.

Answer: go and hit the “random stumble” button 100 times and enjoy random things off the web for a couple of hours, share what you find, build up a varied interesting “record of your findings” (blog – in SU language) and once a week add one of yours to the mix!! Better still, ask one of your friends to do it (if they “really, really like it”, that is).

I did this the other day (100 random stumbles) and one of those was an article by Papaleng – all the other 99 were nothing to do with Triond. So his stuff is on the random list and all 7,000,000 people have a chance to see it. It had about 65 comments and must have had 1,000s of views. I commented, adding that I “randomly stumbled it!!!”

So that’s how it works – random stumbles with naive, genuine, happy sharing of cool/useful/quality stuff with friends who are pretty much exclusive to each person. NOT deliberate, back scratching of mediocre stuff in a closed incestuous pool.

So, what’s it to be??
Community or cholera??

That is interesting. I have never really understood what SU is all about. Maybe I will try it your way.

    Very good article ……

  3. Katie Marie Says:

Thanks! I think too many of us Triond people got introduced to SU through Triond and therefore went at with the limited view of how it was introduced ‘a way to get more views’. It is a great way to find things on the web that you would never otherwise ’stumble’ across. You can find me there as kacky2. I’m slowly getting the hang of it.

  4. Paul Roberts Says:

As always the ‘click’ game can be abused until we find someone who takes the time as you have and explains it. The mystery of views for money will always leave a blotch. Great article thanks. Friend, fan, smile.

2nd article on Triond today that I have read about SU. I’m missing the boat somewhere! On the rare occasion I use SU, I just randomly stumble and don’t have any SU friends… One Trionder did send my link out and I appreciate that! Wondered how I got so many hits! I owe her!
    Thanks,
    Clay

I’ve seen Papaleng, Norbert Soloria Bermosa and Yaffel’s article while stumbling from Triond and all highly rated.

I am new with SU and still figuring out how to go with the flow and thanks for the tip.

  12. Katien Says:

Good tips thankyou. I have 37 people waiting to be friends on SU and I would like to add them all, but haven’t because they all seem to be from Triond, and I’m worried that I will be bombarded with their stuff! I have a lot of trouble with my browser when opening things from Triond on SU.

I’ve been using Stumble for a while, but I feel stupid now that I never thought of adding people as friends on it! Thanks!

I am going to try it your way. Thanks for he tip.

  29. Fresh Writing Says:

    Hey Revivor,

I do agree with you here- Stumble is a great site. Good for a community- it can turn into spam if not controlled carefully, but it’s still fun to use. Excellent information.

    -Fresh Writing

    P.S.,

Do I have you as a friend on Stumble? I don’t think I do…If you want, it’d be great to connect up!

  30. cromanyak Says:

I had never heard of Sumble Upon until I signed up for Triond. It is a really neat site, and I can see your point.

  31. Fresh Writing Says:

Ironic that I am commenting on the same article…XD

First of all I want to apologize if I DO have you on my friend’s list, as I have probably been sending you sites out the kazoo. Re-reading this article may help me curb down that burning desire to get more views through simply sending it to as many people as possible.

One thing I find funny- not rivalry on SU or anything- but CutestPrincess said:

“i find this article very informative…”

Her inbox is ALWAYS full and I receive about 5-10 sites from her a day!

    A bit of irony there…

Anyway, once again I apologize if I’m flooding or have flooded your inbox with my articles. I will most certainly reduce that.

    Kind regards,

    -Fresh Writing

  32. revivor Says:

yeh I agree – cutest princess: we don’t respond if your inbox is full (that means 500 plus unread messages)

  33. Phill Senters Says:

    Nice piece, Good advice.

  34. Louie Jerome Says:

Many Trionders have been banned for abusing SU and many others still don’t heed the warnings. There are many Trionders still under review. I get bombarded every day by the same people wanting me to SU their stuff. Most of the time it doesn’t interest me and it’s poor content. Only the odd one gets my thumbs up.

  35. Atikin Says:

Stumble Upon is great if other people stumble as well as you occasionally but anything in excess is detrimental. Also, sometimes it doesn’t really work as much as you’d expect it to though if it is implemented correctly, the rewards are enormous. Good straight to the point article for anyone wishing to use SU!

  36. B Nelson Says:

I like the “Show a Page liked by a Friend” and the “Show an Image” button.

With dial up and a busy life – I dont get to stumble as much as I might like to but have seen some fantastic sites, just that some take AGES to load.

  37. revivor Says:

I agree that dial up must be a pain!!
I have quite quick download but the content is getting richer and richer too!!
    Happy Stumbling…
