Twitter vs. Safelist

How much different is Twitter from a common Safelist?

Believe it or not, there was a time when the Safelist reigned supreme and anyone who had a need to get the word out used them daily. In recent times the number of successful marketers using Safelists as their mainstay has dwindled and they have gone the way of the Free For All (FFA) website, into oblivion.

The Internet has evolved into an environment that requires relationships to meet with any real success at promoting anything, so the Social Network became the place to be, with MySpace and FaceBook rising to the top of the list of places to be seen.

Then came Twitter, the 140 character wonder at spreading your message far and wide, that is if anyone reads it. Seems we are reverting back to the Safelist mentality, aren’t we? The latest craze is how many 10’s of thousands of followers can you corral overnight? Does anyone actually believe they will read what you Tweet?

I spent some time today going through the Twitter Users I elected to follow? No doubt some programmers and the guru’s that hire them have been hard at work adding to this list uninvited and automatically, because I guarantee a large percentage of these folks were total unknowns to me. Why would I be following a Real Estate Investor in Florida when I live in Oregon? How did someone pimping Teeth Brightners or Dating Services get on a 70 year old man’s page? How did I start reading the “Right Wing News” enough to have them among the choices I follow?

My list goes up even if I don’t touch a thing and I am constantly in need of pruning it back before it takes over from the few people I do have an interest in following. So take heed, watch your hen house or the fox will be running amok at your place too. Needless to say my Remove button has been working overtime to insure these multiple thousand follower magnets no longer include me and Twitter is becoming interesting to visit again.

See you all online!
