Web Talk

A brief discussion about the social media explosion that is Twitter, Who uses it? Why? and why has it suddenly exploded into the attention of main stream media.

Twitter brands itself as simply, asking one question: what ares you doing now? Allowing the user to sign up, for Free, and post 140 character, brief answers to this question, connecting with friends across the net and seeing what they’re doing. It is possibly to follow what a friend is doing with out them following you.

But Twitter has been around for just over 3 years, why the surge in media popularity?

There are a number of reasons for this, but the recent Presidents election in the USA is among the greatest, Barrack Obama is on Twitter, and used it to his advantage for his campaign. He continues to post to it, with a staggering 740,233 followers, reading every post he makes. Stephen Fry, the English actor, comedian, with 389,052 followers, is among the most followed people. Others include Britney Spears and 50 Cent, among others. In Ireland, during an emergency Budget on April 7th, updates of the news was published on Twitter for followers, whom had no near TV to get instant updates.

With a large amount of high profile celebs, posting easily accessible updates on their lives, it’s no wonder so many people have recently signed up to Twitter to see what all the fuss is about. With Twitter traffic jumping 700% in a year, up to 5 Million users, (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2344620,00.asp) it is no wonder the Media has turned its attention to it.

Twitter also has one major business interest. The age demographic of Twitter users is one of the largest span for main stream social media sites, with reports of users ages ranging from 12 to 54, with active posting to Twitter by all ages.

Recently Google has began sniffing around Twitter with a possible buy out in the near future. Rumours of $250m on the table. It looks like Twitter is hear to stay, and we’ll all hear a lot more about it in the near future.
