Best websites when hunting for work.
Here are my top tfive websites to use when hunting for work with a bit of commentary after each one:
- Indeed.com/SimplyHired.com,–I put both of these sites together becasue they are basically the same thing, namely, these are not job listing sites but rather meta-sites that gather job listings from other sites based on your location and describtion. They save you the tune and hassel of having to go to all the other websites yourself.
- Craiglist.com–not a lot of jobs but it has two advantages over other websites. First the jobs are usually local and they divided up into categories so you don’t have to look at a lot of jobs that you are not interested in and do not have the qualifications to get. The second advantage is that draws smaller businesses so the the person getting your email is usually the hiring manager.
- Monster.com–the grand daddy of all job sites. Has the most jobs but since it is pricer tends to have lots of repeat jobs, i.e. companies posting the same openings for weeks (even months) on end. Mosnter also draws bigger companies so many times your resume and cover letter will never make it to the hiring managers desk because some personnel flunkie will weed you out. The popularity of this job board works against you as you are always competing against hundreds of other jobs applicants for every opening.
- CareerBuilder.com–this has effecively replaced the job classifeds of most daily newspapers in the US. Has the same pluses and minuses as Monster.com–lots of jobs, repeat jobs and job applicants.
- JobCircle.com–This job board has a large number of jobs, the only real drawback is there are probably more recruiters, rather then direct hires, on this job board but well worth the look.
