Almost everyone who reads webcomics knows of the greats. Ctrl+Alt+Del, Penny Arcade, xkcd and many more. But what a lot of people don’t know is that there are hundreds of other webcomics out there well worth reading that never get the publicity they deserve.
Well here are my top three that should definitely be looked at.
Serious Emotional Disturbance
A tri-weekly webcomic which follows the character 9 and his friends on their quest to become superheroes. In the SEDiverse everyone has a super power, just not all of them are useful. The power to never be convicted of small crimes, or the power to hear cats for example. But this doesn’t discourage 9 and his group (called Pyromania) from trying to rid the world of evil in any way they can. A sort of black comedy, SED occasionally swirves into darker territory but in general is a light hearted and humorous tale of super powers.
Zebra Girl
Despite the somewhat irregular update schedule, Zebra Girl is a fantastic black and white comic from Joe England. Following the tale of Sandra who gets turned into a demon when her friends start messing with magic, Zebra Girl starts of light and funny but then descends into a much more sombre tone (with occasional bursts of humour) alongside the fall of Sandra. A brilliant piece of work which must be read from the beginning to get the full effect, Zebra Girl is easily one of the best webcomics I have ever read.
Goblins
Definitely one to read if you are a fan of Dungeons and Dragons, even those less well versed in D&D lore can enjoy this comic. Like SED, Goblins fluctuates between bouts of seriousness and humour, but the entire tale is very well written and told. It is set in a humorously stereotypical fantasy setting, and follows the lives of a party of goblin adventurers who started as monsters and declared themselves player characters. The tagline for the comic – “Life through their eyes” – reflects the predominant theme of the comic: telling a heroic tale of creatures normally viewed only as evil and weak.
