The Pathology of Trolls

Understanding the underlying psychological problems of those who Troll.

A Troll is a person who visits websites to attack other posters. S/he has no position, not political,
not social; in short s/he has no ‘point’.

It is attack for attack sake.

In early days Trolls were often pre-pubescent high school boys. Powerless, cowards, the Internet
became their psychodrama where they could act out.

Those who moderated message boards would ban them, delete their posts, and so their victory
 was fleeting.

Where the school boy may mature into a responsible individual, the adult Troll has deep seated
 psychological problems.

The adult who feels powerless grasps the opportunity to use the anonymity of the Internet to
create an all powerful avatar who can attack others with impunity.

With very low self images, Trolls experience that rush of control when they, who are afraid to tell
their neighbor to turn down his radio, can spew invective with impunity.

Trolls post insulting comments hoping another poster will respond. When there is a response this
provides reinforcement of their behaviour.

As passive-aggressive mentalities who can not express hostility in direct ways, the Internet
allows them the perfect venue to vent.

As they desire attention they will join sites, for example, Triond, where instead of posting
submissions, they lurk in the unmoderated forum feeding their pathetic egos with each
response they receive.

No matter what the response, it is a response. One can be more insulting, threatening, it doesn’t
matter. The response, any response is what their pathology requires.

As Trolls are cowards, they run in packs.  It is rare to see a single troll.  They take strength from
each other. They delude themselves into believing they are in the majority and their views are
shared by ’everyone’.

Where average people may be proud of an achievement, trolls exalt over their ‘kills’; that is
persons they have ‘run off’ the forum, or message boards they have caused to close.

When users cease to post, that is Stop Feeding the Trolls, the forum becomes moribund. Trolls
have nothing to say.  Once there is no one to attack they may begin flaming each other, then
cease to log on to the site.

Trolling is the sad attempt at self validation, just as taking drugs, trolling demands more and
more to feed the addiction that props up low self-esteem.

‘Deindividualization’ is a term social psychologists use to explain the reduction in the sense of
one’s own identity.  In online communication the Troll is distant from the victim and prone to
aggressive behaviour.

Behind the nickname used by the Troll is a pathetic individual who feels helpless.  Having to bottle
hostility due to physical/intellectual/ emotional weakness. They can not distinguish between positive attention, praise, approval, affection and negative attention, criticism, hatred, disapproval.
All Attention = Good.

There is some amount of sadism in the psyche of Trolls and that hint of Asperger’s syndrome,
where they can not feel remorse for their actions.

Experienced moderators recognise that no matter how one humiliates a Troll s/he can never believe
s/he ‘lost’. The viable method is to ’suck up’ to the Trolls, gain their trust, at such time they become
quite easy to smack down.

Great post! I made the mistake of trying to reason with a troll – get him/her to see that the nasty and insulting comments were not constructive, and not helping anyone to become a better writer. Big mistake. I know now that I should have just ignored him/her.

    Very good analysis of Trolls.

    Well, very interesting post.

Many Trolls are considered to have Aspergers, which is why they seem totally oblivious to the fact that their words may be hurting another person. They have a serious problem with empathy.

Never try to reason with a Troll. They have no capacity to reason.

Imo and only my opinion. There are three types of troll.
The young juvenile idiot who wants to shock people with childish swearing and outlandishly bad behaviour. The bored sophisticate who just wants to upset and stir up an argument for their amusement and let off steam. Lastly the very smart and clever troll who can hold a very good argument and outwit many of the resident forumites – in an attempt to belittle or demean users, because of some perceived wrong against them or their friends.
All of them are usually loners and seldom hunt in packs, they may well join with another but are usually solitary.
Where the pack comes in, it is usually in opposition to trolls, in that they attack trolls, or weaker members arguments with agusto. Like sharks congregate when blood is in the water, each taking a swipe at the floundering prey with impunity. They are not hunting as a pack as such, more as a lynch mob whipped into a frenzy by a few strong members and an assured outcome of a certain victory.

The first category; we agree. We disagree with the second and third, because the aspect of hurt and humiliation as well as the ‘loner’ idea.

The bored sophisticate may stir up controversy with a inflamatory remark, and then, engage in cogent debate and admit that his remark was an ice breaker.

He does not find the fundie Christian, for example, and begin hounding her from thread to thread, followed by ten or twelve others, whose purpose is to hurt and humiliate and drive her from the forum.

This pack behaviour in hounding a person until they leave the site or are reduced to emotional outburst gives the Trolls pleasure.

Like a drug addiction, they can not stop. They will go on and on, dozens of posts because the more the victim resists the harder they must work to belittle.

Using Triond’s unmoderated Forum as an example, one will see gangs trolling threads, moving en masse from one to another to attack. There is no basis; and they put an inordinate amount of effort, cutting and pasting, and searching for their Victim’s posts so as to attack line by line.

This fixation and engrossment is often a feature of Asperger’s Syndrome. Which ties in nicely as one of the salient points is a total lack of empathy.

How does the fundie Christian feel when she is attacked by a dozen strangers, each launching personal insults against her?

You or I might draw back at such an image, but the Troll sees nothing wrong in this behaviour.

  7. Butterfly Musings Says:

a great article, I have never thought of a correlation between aspergers syndrome and trolling interesting.

  8. L.E.Monist Says:

Trolls try to hurt. They are not trying to be clever, they are trying to hurt someone. Their language is violent and hostile…if you noticed on Triond where threats of physical abuse are tossed like confetti and the Troll seems totally oblivious to the hurtful or threatening nature of the post.

  9. Annie Hintsala Says:

Aspergers and Trolling? I’m not sure that can actually go together, given what I know about it, and the students I have had who have been diagnosed with it. Spamming on the other hand….

  10. L.E.Monist Says:

The inability to recognise how a person might feel reading some of their drivel is why I use the term ‘a hint’. Spamming, where it is the same crap over and over is probably more than a hint.

  11. Lololololol Says:

    C&P
The young juvenile idiot who wants to shock people with childish swearing and outlandishly bad behaviour = Failtroll

The bored sophisticate who just wants to upset and stir up an argument for their amusement and let off steam = Potentialtroll

  12. L.E.Monist Says:

The kid with his experimental obscenities can be banned after the first post. Doesn’t get much kick. Banned, often his post is deleted.

the psuedo sophisticate with his so called urbane and witty style gets on for a while.
