Why not?

A friend sent me the You Tube video of the couple’s nuptials that made history this past week.  At first thought I wondered if the video was real.  I mean, who would have a wedding party dance down the aisle of a church?  In all seriousness, was I really watching a wedding?

I have to admit, what I saw was delightful.  I first thought about how difficult it would be to get the entire wedding party to agree to hip hop down the aisle.  Then I thought, how fun and how different.  What better way to get the party started?

Seriously, weddings are about beginning a life together as husband and wife.  Why not make it your own?  Why not make it fun?  Why not express yourself?  A wedding is for family and friends to share in that special moment that jump starts life together.  Why not make it something to remember?

How many boring weddings have I attended?  They last the average 20 to 30 minutes and other than the occasional “beautiful” comment, can I honestly say I enjoyed myself?  Six months down the line, do I even remember what took place?   Every single attendee at Jill and Kevin’s wedding was smiling.  Aside from seeing the popular video first hand, this is probably a wedding they will not soon forget.

The comments I have read on this video have, for the most part, been fun and positive.  The other comments had to do with the reverence of church and holiness of marriage.  Some people were not happy and believed that this stunt made a mockery of God and church.   Here’s what I believe:  the church is a building.  Though God may dwell there, He dwells there when His people come together for fellowship and celebration.  He does not dwell in an empty church.   The “church” as Christians know it, dwells inside each believer.  God is not beyond rejoicing in song and dance when two people commit their lives to each other and do it by celebrating before Him.   I believe He joined in the festivities with Jill and Kevin.

I say power to them.  If they can convince every single person in their wedding party to join in on the dance, how much more fun will their lives together be?  Trust me, I could not have gotten MY wedding party to dance down the aisle!  Maybe the next time!
