Pros and cons of the Internet.

The Internet has affected all of our lives in one way or another. The Internet was a branch off of other networks created such as APRANET, MILNET, NSI, and NSFNet. The release of this technology has changed the way that we live our lives. Although it is one of the greatest tools accessible at the moment, it must come at a price. This leads us to the question: Is the internet good or bad?

Almost anyone will automatically defend it, but like everything else, there are Pros and Cons. Let’s take a look at some of them.

The Internet was never expected to become what it is today. The amount of content that is created on a day to day basis is phenomenal. It has easily become the main device for obtaining information. Be it for school projects, recipes, guides for repairing basically anything, information on new products…The possibilities are endless. This has sped up the process of finding information, and saves you from having to buy a book or magazine to find the same information. A disadvantage of this is that not all information found on the internet is correct. One website may have information that is totally different from another.

An advantage is the ability to purchase goods without the need to leave your home. Sites such as eBay have made it much easier to find a particular item that you are looking for. Being a worldwide site almost assures you that you will be able to find anything you are looking for.

The introduction of Email has revolutionized the way that we communicate across large distances. The use of Email has sped up the process of contacting people anywhere on the globe. Email is very appealing to large businesses that must communicate with hundreds of people all over the world, saving money and time.

Banking is now often done on the banks website.  The introduction of this has made it easier to do transactions online, but it has also introduced people attempting to steal your bank account information and potentially your money. These scams are often attempted through email. The scammers will usually say that they are someone they are not and request your password for certain reasons. Identity theft is another disadvantage of the internet.

The internet has also bought the ability to be anonymous. This has increased the amount of people abusing others for no reason whatsoever. The victims may be abused through Email, instant messaging services, networking sites ect. The increase in Cyber-Bullying has triggered a launch of several campaigns in order to educate people about Cyber-Bullying and what can be done.

One of the main negative effects of the internet is the amount of time spent on it. Alot of people spend most of their spare time online, and taking time away from their families. Anyone can easily be distracted by a link they followed and easily spend hours researching something that they were first not required to do. The endless amounts of entertainment online is incredible.

These are just some examples of pros and cons surrounding this technology that a lot of us live with and could not live without. In my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons. This is the future we live in, and we must adapt to survive :)
