One big website requires some knowledge experience and most of all, a lot of action to make it successful.

1. You need decent web hosting. Beware of the companies that promise too much for too little. They are either insane or such offer or they are liars. Some decent hosting includes a lot of hard disk space and bandwidth so you never lose a night of sleep during high traffic days. You can get unlimited space for about 10$ a month. Beware that you will get just 10% of the resources for at most 10 minutes, so this is just good for small websites. Once your website starts growing you need to upgrade it to VPS and then to dedicated. The dedicated server is a computer just to serve your website, it’s the fastest thing you can have, however beware that your website need to generate more than 500$ a month to be worth doing such thing. Once you have about one million page views a month this is a required hosting feature. With this server you have also much more control over everything that happens with your website.

2. You need Wordpress but most of all the right and only the right plugins. Some plugins are useless extras while others will crash your server or at least your Wordpress instalation. The plugins you need are: Super Cache, Super SEO Pack, Ad Manager, Related Posts, Auto Tags, and Adsense Revenue sharing if you plan to have other people writing to your website.

3. You need to have only some analytics features. Google Analytics and Statcounter can do the job very well. More than that uses too much resources such as processing power in the user’s machine and you have a harder time digesting all the data.

4. MAke regular backups of Wordpress, you might consider another plugin which is the Automatic Backup. Keep in mind however that it’s quite hard to manage the backups so avoid this at all costs.

5. You need to some both user created content and another section with content from other websites you like. This way you fill your server with more content plus you add links to external website which in return might add a link to you.

6. And finally do not forget to make some products to sell with the Wordpress plugin shopping. It’s easy to sell using Paypal and this plugin. It’s faster, more profitable and more enjoyable than advertising networks, however requires more work too.
