Around the world people use the internet to communicate, meet up with friends, and share their pictures with the world.

On the internet there is a tool called a proxy that allows a person to hide their IP address by using another without requiring any major changes. One major way to do this is by using a free software called Tor. It operates by using other servers as a medium to bounce information between two points. As these mediums are located in many parts of the world this is a useful tool to get around government censorship that is in place in areas such as China.

Proxies are one of the ways to circumvent the “Great Firewall of China”. However, not many people in China know of this or they claim to have no need for it as they are fine without it. If you are travelling to China, Tor is a great tool to your computer as it will provide unrestricted access to the internet. Proxies are also in use in Iran to get around government blocks to sites such as Twitter and Facebook.

So if you plan to travel to China or are in need of the extra safety of anonymity on the web; Proxy servers can be useful. They are used as a way to exercise freedom of speech in many parts of the world by users of the internet. Without it messages to Twitter and Facebook would be easily suppressed.
