As these mediums are located in many parts of the world this is a useful tool to get around government censorship that is in place in areas such as China.

If you are travelling to China, Tor is a great tool to your computer as it will provide unrestricted access to the internet. Proxies are also in use in Iran to get around government blocks to sites such as Twitter and Facebook.

So if you plan to travel to China or are in need of the extra safety of anonymity on the web; Proxy servers can be useful. They are used as a way to exercise freedom of speech in many parts of the world by users of the internet. Without it messages to Twitter and Facebook would be easily suppressed.
