What is a Proxy?

A very simple answer for this is that a proxy is a middleman, which removes the risk of people getting your IP address.

An example is:

You want to connect to a website, you get data from their computer to yours, to do that they need your ip address to send it too.

But with a proxy instead of sending it straight to you it goes to the proxy server which transmits it to you.

Why do people use a proxy?

People use a proxy to have more security, sure the proxy server has your ip address but it also has millions of other people who are using the proxy. The proxy gives a sense of security to you because it makes it much harder to get your ip address and only the proxy server will know it instead of thousands of websites who may try to hack you or annoy you.

How Do I Use a Proxy?

Their are many ways to use a proxy but the most common ways are using a WWW proxy which is using a website such as www.hidemyass.com or by connecting to proxy server’s via software.
