What is good and bad about using satellite service to be your internet provider. Considering areas of service, cost, and competition.
Satellite access is everywhere these days. You can use it talk on the phone whether at home or on the road. It pipes television signals into your home in digital high definition if you choose. Satellites will beam you the internet. You can have it through a dish on the roof or a card in your laptop.
Satellite internet is pushing its way into the heart of this internet addicted society. You can go online and upload and download just about anywhere and anytime. For most people, satellite internet service means sitting in your house with a cable running to a dish mounted somewhere outside. The speed is fast. The signal is excellent. However, there are some positive aspects and some negative aspects to choosing satellite internet service.
The Positives
Satellite internet service competes well with cable when comparing speed and accessibility. You can buy the service with a range of connection speeds. Even the slow ones are fast. Satellite will always leave dial up in the dust.
Using a satellite dish to receive your internet service means that like cable and DSL, you will always have a connection ready to go when you sit down to the computer. You do not have to worry about tying up a phone line for the connection.
If you have a satellite connection, you can have an internet phone service provider like Vonage without having to deal with the local phone provider. This competition should eventually result in better and cheaper phone service for everyone.
When you move, you can take the dish and modem with you and never have to deal with a service technician to set up your internet service in a new place. This means that if you can set up your dish to be portable, you could even take it with you on vacation and not be at the mercy of a WiFi service.
The Negatives
For most people the satellite service is static. That is, it is only at your home location. Not all satellite service offer a dial up option for traveling.
Stormy weather that will affect your satellite television will also interrupt satellite internet service. Lightning and strong winds are the main culprits here. You need to keep you dish clean of too much snow and ice, also.
Satellite internet service is pricey. It can cost as much as 3 or 4 times more than a DSL. Frequently, it will cost more than cable service. This is even more true if you have a package plan on cable or phone service. Some satellite providers have not figured out how to put a package together to offer a bundled savings.
If you do not already own the dish and modem, you will have to pay a high price for it or sign at least a two-year contract with an expensive buyout clause. This means that you are proposing marriage to the satellite company when you sign up for service. Some marriages last a shorter time and cost less to exit.
In conclusion, if you are in an area that high speed service is unavailable any other way, satellite internet service can be a blessing. If you hate the cable and phone companies, you have an alternative for a fast internet connection without having to buy an expensive cup of coffee. Satellite internet service is not for everyone, but it might be for you if you do your homework first.
