How to act on a social networking site–properly.

The Golden Rule is also applicable on the net: “Do not do unto others what you do not want others do to you”. Because, that MojoX or Pinky_042 is actually another person in front of his computer; living, breathing, and quite capable of feeling. However, there are more things to consider. Read this list below:

  • Do not write in All-Caps – because this will give the impression of shouting. However, capitalizing all the letters of a phrase or sentence is also used to emphasize an idea (usually the letters are also set to Bold).
  • Use emoticons – if you are having a hard time expressing your feelings. Sometimes a sentence will be crystal clear to you but not for your readers. An ironic statement, for example, can be expressed more by putting a “:|” emoticon after the period.
  • Never use extraexclamation points – except when happiness or excitement is the feeling that you want to express. Otherwise, the impression will be just like on number one.
  • Do not get too personal – when you are commenting on posts or other similar stuff. Sure, it is okay to say if the article has bias, altered or false content but you must do this on a very very careful manner. Always be analytical and sensible on your feedbacks.
  • Stop and leave the site when a fire converstion starts. - This usually happens on forums involving two opposing parties. Whenever one starts, be wise, leave the site/log-off your account.
  • Always drop a ‘thanks’ – or something the like to the author of the article. Especially if his work is exactly the one you are looking for. It is easier to type a six- or seven-letter word than to type (and make) the article itself.
