A straightforward user friendly guide with pictures for you to boost that download speed!

Okay, this guide is for those who have just downloaded their shiny new torrent application, and are eagerly awaiting to download a completely legal torrent. Of course.

1. Download uTorrent/Bitcomet/Azureus

An important factor is the type of client used. For this guide i shall only speak of uTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/) as it is the best torent client i have ever used and i experience the fastest speeds on it. Other clients work fine, but i find uTorrent easiest to handle and change settings.

2. Upload Limits and Download Limits

You’ll want to set the highest bandwidth allocated to your download, therefore select “High”. Under Set Download Limit Select Unlimited. Finally, many people are under the wrong impression that setting Upload Limit to the lowest possible, 1kB/s, allows them to download at the fastest possible rate. This is wrong. People seed you torrents, you have to give back to community. Moral issues aside, torrents work on a sharing basis. The more you seed to people, the more likely people will seed to you. Everyone has different segments of the file, and when the parts are distributed, it gives rise to a win-win situation. This point is vital, as most people fail to realise the cause of their ~20kB/s downloads. I saw a significant rise of 250kB/s based on this alone. Therefore, it is important to ensure that you set Download Limit = Unlimited, Upload Limit = ~100kB/s

3) Ports

Preferences > Network > Port. Many ISPs (internet service providers) throttle and monitor certain ports with Torrent Clients often use (because most torrents are illegal). Hence, it is important to switch ports every now and then to ensure that the low speeds you are getting may not be due to your ISP throttling your downloads. Generally i use port 45682.

4) Advanced Options

Tinker with your router and internet options. These basic options should get you above 150kB/s on a regular torrent with many seeders.
