Top 10 countdown of the world’s top traffic websites according to alexa.com.
At number 1, not surprisingly is Google, for those who don’t know what Google is go check the Merriam-Webster dictionnary! There is even a verb now to (google), which means to search something on Google.
The second place goes to Facebook who have 65 million users and many of them check their accounts Facebook accounts muliple times per day.
At 3, we have Yahoo, Yahoo serves has a search engine, chatrooms, e-mail, forums and community help. Altough I consider Yahoo’s numbers to be over-estimated, because their instant messaging system automatically sets Yahoo as your homepage, so its getting traffic by people just opening their browsers and going to another site.
Fourth place is awarded to Youtube, the video sharing giant, which, ironically, is owned by Google.
Windows live stands at 5, altough like yahoo its their instant messaging software that automatically sets it as a homepage that makes it have high traffic.
Wikipedia is at 6, being the tool most people nowadays use for general culture and answers to their questions, the open encyclopedia has often been blamed for letting people post information that might not be true or that is biased, but it is nonetheless a powerful tool.
7 goes to blogger.com which is a free weblog publishing service that links many blogging sites to one.
At number 8 we have Msn.com, which is the default homepage for Internet Explorer, the world’s most widely used browsing tool, so this like Yahoo and Windows Live live on being homepage rather than true popularity.
The top non-american site stands at number 9, is baidu.com which is the most popular search engine in China, and has an added mp3 function for searching music.
Number 10 is a familiar face, Yahoo Japan.
It is also good to note that in the consequent top 20 we have Google India, Germany, China, France and United Kingdom, rank respectively 12, 14, 17,19 and 20.
