What to do if your ISP is playing you around.
Technology, you either love it or hate it. Personally I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love it because it helps me in my everyday work and I hate it because it’s not totally foolproof.
For instance, take the other day, (well more like a week continuously actually), I was having problems with my internet connection. At a certain time everyday it just would not connect, no matter what I do. So I ring up the internet provider and tell them about my problem, they go through a series of things trying to fix it, changing my modem setting, checking all the lines, making sure it was all turned on and then finally blaming it on the phone company that I have my ADSL running through. The next morning it was working again. I thought to myself good now I can work. I finished what I was doing and went to run some errands, thinking I can do some more work when I get home. I get home that afternoon and you guessed it! The internet was down again! This was the 2nd day in a row and I was starting to get annoyed. I rang the ISP again and went through the same series of events I went through the previous day, once again my ISP blamed it on the phone line.
I rang up my phone provider and found out there was nothing wrong with the line and proceeded to ring the ISP again, letting them know that I have already spoken to my phone provider and that nothing was wrong. Once again in the morning the internet was working fine and once again it dropped out in the afternoon. This happened every single day for a week and nothing was resolved, until the day I rang my ISP to cancel my account to go with someone else. That’s when they said they had located my problem and were in the process of rectifying it, just to give them 24 hours more. Since then I have had no problems with my internet and I love it again.
I’m not sure if this was directly technology’s fault or if it was incompetence on the part of the ISP, but I do know if you threaten to take away money from someone, the problem gets fixed pretty quickly. My advice to everyone with an ISP (which is nearly everyone these days) is to not worry about trying to get something fixed for a week but on the first day tell them you are going to cancel their service if the problem is not rectified within 24 hours. The ISP’S don’t like the thought of a competitor getting their leftovers and you get your problem fixed quickly!
