Is Google Making Our Kids Stupid?

Are our children failing because they are cheating with Google? Is our whole society cheating with Google?

Type anything into Google and wait about 0.1235 seconds and you will be directed to hundreds if not thousands of pages with information on what you typed in.

Is this helping us? I mean is Google helping or making us dumber? In other words are we becoming more stupid as a society in a whole because of Google and its usage?

Are kids becoming dumber then they normally are because of Google? Is Google going to be the next blame for the lack of or rather the failure of education in America ?

Kids have a project they need to look up certain words, like the word Scarab. Google tells us it’s a boat or a fast formula one racing car, it’s also a dung beetle and the NATO name for the Russian SS-21 short-ranged tactical missile as well as the name of a land car in Battlestar Galatica series. Hey, I didn’t know that one or the one about the Russian Missile. I guess I learned something.

You see, that’s what I mean.

People bitch and nag about Google. It’s making my kid more stupid than he is. It’s wasting my kid’s time. It’s cheating at homework or school work.

No, Google is not making us dumber. It’s actually making us smarter. We learn a different thing each time we use it and if we’re learning something, it might be possible that even our kids are learning something.
A great man once told me that in order to be a good leader and a well rounded person, you need to learn one thing every day of your life. If you can learn just one thing, you’re on your way to being a well rounded person.

I’ve tried to do that throughout most of my adult life whether it is reading something in a book or believe it or not just watching a game show and learning something. (Okay, its Jeopardy) One thing, that’s all you need to learn, just one thing a day and guess what? Google makes it easier. Try it. Type anything into Google, maybe it’s just a word you heard or a saying or the name of someone that is supposed to be famous. Type it in and read some of the results you get. It might surprise you and at the same time teach you something.

So is Google making us lazy or making our kids more stupid. First of all, they aren’t stupid they’re pretty smart kids with a lot of brain power. I would have liked to see you at their age, listening to your IPOD, doing homework on your computer and IM your friends at the same time.

Google is just a tool and like any other tool it depends on how we use it.

We can use it improperly and we get nothing out of it. We can use it properly and we will learn one new thing a day.

Which way would you rather use this tool?

Let’s all learn just one new thing a day.
