Internet: Limitations in The Speed in The Future

Will the web ever continue to grow in speed like today? Are there any technological limitations to the amount of speed we can have?

Is there any maximum speed for the internet? Will it happen the same it happend with cars that stopped improving their speed around 400 KMH?

With the internet? Maybe not. Since electricity works at the speed of light (and yes, light has a speed limit, big, but limited) you might not see a real wall to internet speed progress in the next 10 years.

What is limiting internet speed so far? Computer power and ethernet and other network ports limitations. When you access a webpage you are actually accessing a computer and that webpage will be sent to you through many computers or a network of computers such as the server, the backbone, the ISP, the satellites and finally you, if nothing comes in the middle of the way that is. The slowest part of this network link will be the one determining the final speed of your connection, just like the weakest component of your computer determines the final speed of the computer. It’s always the weakest one.

One thing about the internet is that some computers are there since be beginning, which means around 60’s or 70’s and uncle Sam is really not interested in retiring them so far.

The ideal internet speed would the same speed you have with your computer, one click one opened page, but even if we manage to replace all satellites and computers, there will still be some lag, just like the hard disk access time.

SSD hard disks will do not good because the problem is really in the network ports, they have such huge lag and they will continue to have this lag for quite a long time. Optical fiber will fix this but only to a point.

What ca be done to improve the overall internet speed and what will be the real internet speed limit?

In the distant future the only limit will be your limit because internet will load instantly any amount of data, but to reach that point, billions of dollars need to be invested and no company can declare a loss in the profits, even if just temporary, so in the near future you might just get more 20 or 30 Mb a second.

Science has come a long way since the 1900’s and the last 40 years have been incredible, I can only imagine what the next 10 years hold.
Great piece of writing as usually for you.
