Imagine how Internet will become in the future. Even by now, its technology have made it possible to access all kind of information nearly anytime and anywhere.
We all know that Internet has made our life much easier. Thanks to the Internet, we’re now able to access all kind of information easily. Back into the past, we would have to spent hours finding the right book in the library just to find a piece of information we’re looking for. But now, all we need is to type and click.
Since it’s invented on 1960s, it has continue growing rapidly until now. When Internet was first invented, there’s no such thing as search engine or a website, there’s only a software to communicate with each other using a text over the Internet. Therefore, I expected that Internet will still grow rapidly and within few decades, we could see and use a lot of extremely great and useful features that will make everything easier.
Here are the new features that I presumed will eventually invented in time :
Ability to send a scent over the Internet.

This has actually been invented right now and the technology is called Fragrance Synthesis Over The Internet. It’s made to make it easy for people to test out sample fragrances by just visiting a perfume website. However, the transmitter and receiver devices are still extremely expensive and hence it’s impossible for majority of people to have it.
In the future, the price will eventually become affordable to most people. With this invention, a person can send the smell of their body in the morning to their lover overseas, making them feel really close. Other useful use would be test out the food on a culinary website by tasting their smell or maybe to taste the scent of celebrity who make their scent publicly available.
Ability to access internet from your own brain.

This will make the Internet totally accessible anywhere at anytime. We’ve seen this kind of feature in a sci-fi movie like The Matrix where an implant is planted on a human brain, making it possible to communicate with a thought. If this is possible, then browsing the Internet would become very easy since all we need is to think. We could finally ’save our energy’ that’s wasted from clicking and typing when browsing in a current regular method.
Ability to access human memory and vision.

Several scientists are confident that this kind of technology would be invented someday. That’s why they’re preserving some great people’s body and brain like Lenin. When this has been invented, people will be able to learn how the great people live their life and historian would be able to know the true story of that great person.
This invention would also become helpful for a law investigation since a homicide victim’s brain might show the real face of their killer. This technology will also make it easier for a muted person to communicate with other people. A normal person may also send their thought and memories to the person they want, making it easier to tell a long story to other people.
Ability to actually visit the place we’re browsing in the internet easily.

Futuristic sci-fi movie like Resident Evil has showed that teleporting is possible by breaking the human body into a micro particles and send them with a light speed to their destination, ignoring all kind of solid objects on the way. This way, the body won’t be broken long enough to make the person dies. Therefore, I think this kind of teleportation would eventually become invented and we could finally travel to the place we want by just visiting a website.
Simulated place has also been shown in a lot of sci-fi movies like X-Men. Imagine if we could play an Online game in a simulated place. This way we can move our body and talk just like in real world. If it’s a war game we play, it would be really fun to be in a realistic battle without actually destroying a real object or killing a real human.
Extremely fast speed.

With the features above have been invented, we’ll need a very fast internet to access them easily. Imagine how much Terabytes a memory of a person could be. The size of it would depend on how long the person had lived.
So, here’s the calculation, if the person had lived for about 25 years, that’s mean he has about 219,000 hours long of memory. Normally a 2 hours DVD movie would sized about 4 Gigabytes, so if it’s that long the size would be : 4 GB * 219,000 / 2 = 438,000 GB. That’s about 438 Terabytes and if we use the standard Internet download speed right now (2 Mbps/284 Kb/s), it would take about 428,403 hours or equal to 48 years (what???).
Therefore, we really need a very fast internet speed for this. I would say that our standard Internet speed will eventually reach 5 Tbps someday.
Final Word
These are just the few features that I imagine would be invented. I’m really sure that there will be much more cool unexpected features that will surprise us all in the future. If you have any other imagination of how the Internet will become in the future, feel free to leave your thought in a comment section.

@giftarist : Yes, I hope this would happen too. It would helped us a lot if these inventions have been made.
@Themax : Thanks. This is actually just a random thought that I got yesterday so I shared it out here.

@Francois : Yup, I agree. I’m sure these inventions would make humans more connected with each other since they can actually communicate at anytime, no matter how great the distance is.
@Catrina : Haha, thanks. Every pictures are the best and most related with the article. Glad you like it.
Thank you for all of your comments!

Certainly very creative thoughts! As far-fetched as some of them may seem, it would be really interesting to see it become reality some day, stretching the boundaries of science and the internet.
Very well written. (:

I agree, human can made great inventions time after time, no matter how impossible they are. I just can hope I live long enough to be able to see these great inventions.
Thank you for your comment, TheOldPoet!

really nice article. However, keep in mind that no matter what amazing things the Internet allows us to do it will be used by human\\\\\\\’s and therefore can bring good things and bad.
November 4th, 2009 at 8:46 am
You made a good point, every inventions always have both negative and positive effects. These inventions can and will bring negative effect if the user is a bad person. However, in my opinion, these inventions would actually give more positive effects.
Thank you so much for your opinion, Martie!

I read somewhere that the internet would be more like a 3D world that actually responded more like a first person video game, only that it is controlled by your brain. Not sure how that would work, but all of the ideas expressed here are very interesting! Good job!

The Matrix movie is pretty much showed the characteristic you mentioned. It would be great to have it become reality.

@alc : Thanks. It’s definitely a dream to think about.
@Ruby Hawk : Yup, human capability is so high that even such impossible things are not surprisingly impossible to reach.
Thank you for your comments!

Wow ! nice ! you got some imagination there
November 5th, 2009 at 3:04 am
The brain things are only going to happen when we are able to integrate a computer system into the brain…which is a long way off.
In my opinion the internet is going to die soon because of all the spam and useless junk filling its pages.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:06 am
Yes, but none of these imaginations are impossible to happen. I’m sure most of them will happen in this decade.
Thank you for your comment, b bb!

Kingryanv, every single inventions here are possible to happen. In fact, sending scent over the internet has already been invented. I appreciate your opinion but I don’t think Internet would die unless some big disaster has happened to earth. And only less than 5% of websites in Internet are full of junk and spam so it’s unlikely that Internet will be closed because of that.
Thank you for your comment!

If you have a device on your desktop which is capable of making a scent, why would you buy the scent being advertised? Just get your PC to make more of it.
I have deep reservations about the teleportation idea in general. By disassembling your bodies on a molecular level you would die and then a facsimile of you would appear at the destination. I’m really not convinced that the consciousness at the other end is still you. It seems like you cease and a copy of you gets to live on in your place. I think it is much more likely that we will be teleporting (or creating copies of) objects but not people.
Your other ideas are more likely I think. Brain interfaces are definitely on the way. I know a guy doing research into connecting to the spinal cord via an electromagnetic ring so there is no need to break the skin. His team are already able to control simple things just using a collar around the neck.
Good article.

The idea of that kind of teleportation has been expressed in The Prestige movie where a magician wanted to impress his audience with a teleportation trick that seems so unguessable. I wouldn’t want to have that kind of teleportation as it wouldn’t be nice to know that I’ve actually killed ‘the other me’. I just can hope the particle teleportation method would be invented instead.
That’s a great news about the controlling with brain. I can’t wait until it’s invented for more advanced use such as controlling the computer.
Thank you for your comment, Paul!

cool features. You really have wide imagination of the future and these things might just happen. Hoping it will be soon.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:56 am
Thanks, Jane. These inventions are extremely possible to happen and some of them have been invented too right now.
Thanks for commenting!:D

Let’s first hope for teleportation then let’s “upload it” on Internet XD
But that would be like dangerous of you have fake teleported that like transport you in no where xD.
If there’s teleportation it would be like an official website, i’m sure.
