There are Internet sites which focus on the class clown in a school or focus on some zany video clip. These sites intend to be humorous.
There are Internet sites which aim at being funny. They may have jokes or funny pictures or read-between-the-lines stories. There are other sites on the Internet which are intended to be serious. These include the matchmaking or personals sites. The ideal outcome for such sites is that two lonely people become good friends, going from being strangers to lovers. Romance is not a funny topic; it involves two lonely people become a happy and fulfilled couple.
Sure, there are attempts at humor on the personals sites. These, however, tend to serve as ice-breakers, attempts to make the writer appear to be jovial and fun-loving. The writer of such humor wants to find someone who will appreciate his or her jolly nature and become acquainted enough to begin dating. They are attempts to prove that the writer is a real person rather than a geek.
To find the actual funny side of some of the personals writings sometimes involves reading between the lines. For example, a couple is chatting after their initial online meeting. One asks the other, “Do you live alone?” We all realize that this question is actually an attempt to know of the other person is in a relationship at the present time. The expected response would be “Yes” or “No”. If there is another response, the humor has begun. If the response is, “I’m alone now”, what does it actually mean? Does it mean that he or she has a partner who is not with them while they are chatting at the present moment? Maybe the partner or husband/wife is at work at that time.
Another source of entertainment on the personals sites is the photographs. Of course, some put the picture of a well-known Hollywood star as their avatar in their profile. This is usually understood as not really putting a self-picture online. This is considered a type of joke and can be mildly funny. Some people put a twenty-year-old picture of themselves online. This is deceptive and not funny. What seems funny to this writer is when a person puts a good-looking photo of another person on their profile. What happens whenever they finally meet?
Sorry to say, we seldom are able to see what happens when the couple meets for the first time. Our instincts tell us that there will be some squirming going on as she tells him that the web site must have accidentally put the wrong picture on her profile.
