Our Changing Social Interactions.
I heard you have the latest Iphones and Blueberries. I heard that even with eyes closed, your fingers can text hundred words per minute on your latest gadgets. That is very impressive. But, can those same fingers recognize your mother’s hand even with your eyes wide open? Can you feel the whirl of flowers, the touch of rain, the essence of soil with those same fingers?
I heard you can send emoticons through your gadgets to convey your feelings instantly to someone. That is very convenient. But are you still capable of facing someone face to face and displaying your affection in real life? Or is my worse fear coming true that all the smiles, winks, hugs, and kisses are fast becoming reserved just for the digital spectrum of life?
I heard you can send birthday cards, gifts, and even formal wishes to the recipient over phones and computers now. That is very thoughtful and nice of you. But have you forgotten the delight of a simple wish from heart, without any materialistic attachment and unnecessary formalities? Do you still take a couple minutes out of that day and truly thank someone of being born and coming into your life?
I heard you can stay in touch with everyone you ever knew by logging onto one of those social network sites you are so fond of. That is very helpful. But do you truly want to stay in touch with so many people, or you consider accepting a friend request just as adding another feather to your illustrious list of friends? Isn’t the illusion of staying in touch actually taking you further apart from someone you were so close to in the past ? Isn’t it diminishing the value of the priceless memories you once shared with someone? “Hey how is life?” “Good”………And the cycle continues every two months.
I heard emails diminished the art of writing letters a while back now. Emails were fast and efficient; whereas letters were too slow for our today’s lifestyle. That is fair enough. Now I heard that you have become so busy that you do not even mind writing the entire sentences in your emails and text messages anymore. Why would someone write complete sentences when u cn get d msg acrs in shrt frm newys? But do you realize that this act is not only shaking the borders of English vocabulary, decreasing your IQ , but also slowly and surely making you inept of proper social conversations in everyday life?
No wonder our education system wonders where today’s Shakespeares and John Keats are. Here is the answer – they are in the mall, being wowed by their latest electronic gadgets, losing their individuality and creativity, and getting lost in the artificial race to show off.
