Information has been regulated throughout the ages, be it by the government, to protect itself, parents to shield a child from inappropriate things, or simple embarrassment, there have always been people trying to stop the spread of information throughout history.

This is no different since the rise of the Internet in 90s. Corporations, schools, governments, and many other organizations seek to censor and block access to information. In some cases, it is done by a tyrannical government wishing to oppress it’s people. In others, to change the mindsets of people. In any scenario, it is morally unjustifiable, as well as debatably illegal in several countries.

There are several different ways to bypass censorship, the most common is a proxy. A proxy is a website that downloads a site to it’s server, then shows it to you, effectively acting as a middleman between you and the site you are trying to access. The best proxies I have listed below.

Proxies will work for most sites, but some sites that are more touchy or script based require something else. That something is Tor. Tor is an application suite that provides you with the tools necessary to protect your identify online. What it also can do for you is let you access sites that are blocked by the administrator(s) of the network you are on. It may be downloaded for free at http://www.torproject.org/easy-download.html.en. It comes with a preconfigured Firefox build, which will let you browse the web privately and securely.
