Guidelines for Stumblers

Some people on Stumbleupon have really annoying habits that spread to other people and generally tick everyone off. I’m dealing with this in my usual way: by putting in my two cents.

Stumbleupon is a great service, so please don’t ruin it for the rest of us, please:

1. Don’t use that old from the page: “… “ comment. if we wanted to know what was on the page, we would look at it. Plus, somebody has probably posted that already.

2. Comments aren’t ALWAYS nessecary. If you’re just going to say “cool site” then a thumbs-up will suffice.

3. Make sure you select the right topic. Just because the topic you want isn’t available from the condensed list of your favorite tags doesn’t mean you can’t fish it out of the dropdown menu. You might even consider asking annother stumbler to discover it for you if you don’t think you can find the right topic.

4. Please don’t stumble things like Wikipedia articles. Stumbleupon and Wikipedia are seperate services for a reason.

5. Don’t argue about political values or call other stumblers stupid, please.

6. Don’t stumble pages just because they have a “stumble this” button on them. They’re usually just a summary of information found elsewhere. Try to do a quick web search for an official site on the matter, and stumbe that instead of the article. This may seem kind of rude to the bloggers and people who write these things, but then again it teaches them right for spamming like that. I’m sure they can get hits elsewhere.

7. Don’t stumble things from blogs, or gossip sites like Sun. That’s what RSS feeds are for.

8. Don’t stumble people’s accounts. I know the feature is there, but that doesn’t mean you have to use it. Use the “subscribe” link and it won’t bother other people.

9. Don’t use poor language in your comments, like swearing.

10. If anyone else around you is misusing the system, be sure to do something about it. Report abusive comments, request that erroneous topics be changed. and don’t feed the trolls.

Thank You.

You make some good points here. I really hate stumbling just to find I ran into 100 wikipedia pages I never cared about.
