After discovering the website Stumble Upon and initially using it purely as a tool to promote my Triond articles, I have now found it to be a great site which has directed me to many interesting and helpful things on the world wide web. Here are some websites I have discovered through StumbleUpon which are excellent for helping writers.

1. www.writing-world.com

This site gives advice and tips on every aspect of writing, including naming characters and bringing settings to life in fiction, writing non-fiction and help with understanding the actual business side of writing and getting published. Well worth a look if you are passionate about words and the things you write.

2. www.confusingwords.com

This website contains a database of over 3200 words which are troublesome to both readers and writers. Well worth using as a reference point if you are unsure about the difference between affluent and effluent, or want to know whether you should use affect or effect!

3. www.webook.com/911writersblock/topic:Writing

Set out like a payphone, this is a fun site which attempts to cure any storytellers with writers block. Each number on the keypad corresponds to an element of a story (for example “dial” 1 for ’setting’ or 3 for ‘dramatic entrances’), whilst it is largely designed  for fun who knows; maybe it will give you the inspiration to write a classic!

4. www.afterthedeadline.com

After the Deadline is a free download which uses artificial intelligence and natural language processing technology to find your writing errors and offer smart suggestions. This applies to spelling, style, and grammar and it is compatible with the vast majority of word processing packages and writing websites.

5. www.phrasefinder.co.uk

Is an online thesaurus with a difference:instead of finding single words it finds phrases. It works by generating a list of phrases and sayings related to a word which you have typed into the “intelligent search function” and its results are pleasantly surprising. The website claims to have access to the largest database of English language phrases and sayings available on the Internet.
