I am sure this is just a minor overlook by the people at Mozilla/Firefox, but I decided to do a little investigating. “Jews” and “Jewish” are two words not recognized by their browser’s spellcheck feature. Interestingly enough, the same is not true for all other major religions… Haven’t the Jewish people suffered enough???
So, today I was browsing the ‘net at work… you didn’t think I actually do work while on the job, did you?
Typing in keywords, I ended up finding something that seriously disturbs me in
Firefox
(Mozilla). Within the Firefox browser, a sometimes useful feature is the spell-check. It highlights words with a red underlining if they are incorrect. A right-click on that word will pop open a window that offers suggested correct spellings.
When one types in “Jew,” or “Jewish,” in lowercase, it does not offer those words in a capital-case form. However, with “Christ,” “Buddhism,” “Muslim,” and “Christianity,” there is the option to change it to the proper casing.

I use the Mozilla Firefox browser avidly myself. This isn’t a criticism, I just think it is something to ponder about…

Hey. Just wanted to note that we don’t actually make the Firefox spell checker. We incorporate the popular Hunspell open source spell checker and that project maintains all of the different language dictionaries.
You’d probably also be surprised that until very recently, our own product names, “firefox”, “mozilla”, “thunderbird”, etc. weren’t included in the english dictionary either

I wonder if maybe judaism is capitalized and there are not capital versions of christian, buddhist, etc. I think of jew or jewish relating more to christian than Christianity or Buddhism

Dear Lord! Call out the troops! This is a travesty! How can anyone stand for this? What a horrible scar upon the face of the planet! My Jewish friends all came over to my house and were wallowing in tears when they heard about this. We had a candle light vigil and helped console each other for support. Oh, the horror!

It also doesn’t recognize the word plesiosaur, lots of computer dictionaries and word banks have mistakes and words left out, but I’m with you on that I highly doubt it’s anything antisemitic.
