Annoying Text Messaging Habits

As cellphones have become “smarter” and text messaging is now the norm, certain habits are forming that are increasingly annoying and sometimes just plain rude.

There are some habits that have formed since text messaging has caught on as a way to keep in touch with people and ask a quick question or relay some news.  Twitter has banked on this as well. A few annoying habits have also arose and here they are:

  1. The mass tweet or text – you know it. It may be something along the lines of, “What are you up to tonight?” or “I’m at So and So eating, who wants to join me?”  This is the mass text that isn’t special, thoughtful, or anything.  It’s the sender looking for what’s good to do and will filter out who to hang with based on that. Or it’s the sender who is somewhere and just wants to find something to do and doesn’t care who it is he or she hangs out with.  This type of message is impersonal, thoughtless, and shows that the sender isn’t specifically looking to see YOU. If you reply and then get no reply, you know they have found something “better” to do. I see this on Twitter often and it’s probably one of the rudest ways to contact “friends” that I’ve come across.
  2. The text sent during dinner – you go out to dinner with some friends and maybe you all check your phones or twitter to talk about stuff.  But what about that part of dinner where it seems your company would prefer to text with someone else rather than actually talk to you?  Here’s a scenario:  Waiting for the check, the conversation has somewhat died out, so the phone comes out and the texting begins.  What do you do?  Sit there or take out your phone? If there is group, you may find yourself sitting among a number of faces lit up by iPhones. How to get your message across that face to face is still preferred? You can send a text to everyone at the table asking if you should all order dessert or go to a bar afterwards. It may bring them back from the world of texting.
  3. The texter who goes to the bathroom to avoid being rude but is then gone for about 10 minutes which in turn, is rude. Maybe you should have just stayed home and ordered food and texted him or her while watching a movie.
  4. The person who still uses the abbreviations from 2001. You know these messages, “C U L8R,” or “TTYL.” They should upgrade their phone.
