And I Never Left the House!

Web Talk

Are we in danger of becoming a society of hermits and degenerating into people who lose the ability to speak without the aid of a keyboard or is it possible to live a full life at home alone?

We have for some years now become increasingly aware that just about everything is available to us on the internet.  As someone who works from home I rarely see anyone outside my immediate family – I like it that way.  My work is carried out via email content and my wages processed through online methods. Last week I decided to see how many of my duties I could perform without leaving this very seat, it didn’t work well with the ironing or the washing up but most other things worked without a problem.  I have been paying my bills and doing my weekly shop in this way for some time now and at busy times like Christmas it is a god send – but nothing new there, so have thousands of others.

So I looked at learning, no real surprise that I could partake in an e-course on just about any subject or just look at a number of ‘how to’ sites.  I could even get a creativity kick from one or two of the numerous book/music/video/photo sites, talk to those I know and some I don’t through the various networking sites.

The Mission

So then I put myself on a mission – I was going to spend seven days at home (nothing odd there) during which time I was going to read one book, watch two films, make three food items from scratch, acquaint myself with four new people, learn how to do five things I’d never done before, discover six products I’d like to buy (that I wouldn’t normally look for) and find seven mainly useless but interesting websites.

The Result

Well as suspected with the vast array of things available to me from the WWW it wasn’t really that hard but to complete my mission, but it did take me to places I never expected to be. I was able to do some ecommerce shopping at DNA art at http://www.dna11.com/ (top picture) I learned how to make bath bombs at  http://www.bathbomb.biz/ (second picture) and read free books from http://www.fullbooks.com/.

Conclusion

My fingers may end up changing shape and my voice box may eventually fail but in reality there is no reason anybody needs to leave the house in order to live a full and varied lifestyle!
