Worst Website Policies

Web Design

If you do not want to make your users go away to the competition, you must read this.

  1. Making a site out of advertisements. Did I say that the best way to make a user go away almost forever is with advertisements? It never fails.

Most people make a site out of advertisements instead of making advertisements out of a good website making the site. It’s easy these days to see a website with 3 Adsense units plus 3 other banners from other network and even still some couple of dozens of ads from networks that pay you only when you sell. With a website like this is not easy to earn a regular visitor. At best they will only visit you once, maybe twice to laugh about your site and you. Advertisements on a site should be reduced to the minimum possible. Only add the ads that really perform their best. Do not keep ads that make little or no money, they could be blocking you from getting visitors from other much more profitable places.

  2. Not telling your visitors what is your privacy Policy. Most visitors are already aware of the privacy issues most wbesites have and about the data they collect from them and for how long they retain it. Most people even read the full TOS and the Privacy section of each and every site they sign up before doing so. And you, do you have a privacy policy? If you are using Google Analytics you are collecting a lot of data about your users. You are not able to see each user one by one but you still use his data to make more data to you, even if you combine that data with all others. Please explain it to your user, do not make him think bad things about you or your business. I like to use Stat Counter in my sites, and I can see where they came from, their contry, their IP address, their operating system, browser and so much more. Some advertising networks like Advertising.com even demand you to have that privacy page before you run their ads.
  3. Making your user register himself to get all the content on your website. This is one of the biggest traffic killers. I understand you want to keep your traffic and you want to learn more about your user, but if you make him have to register, he is very likely to go somewhere else because he fears spam, time wasting messages and that your site is not good enough to have him registered on it. If you want to have registered users, just give im some extras if he does so, but do not block full site access.

If you are a beginner webmaster you will see everyday that you are making a lot of mistakes today, but those mistakes will be corrected soon.

An  expert webmaster already knows how to manage his site the right way but I still see some of these mistakes.
