Web Design

I have been trying to develop my own website but it has been taking far longer than I imagined and the process is rather painful.

There must be a better way to set up a website, I thought. I began to search the internet to look for free website templates to help me improve on my website. I have found eight incredible websites providing free templates to anyone and everyone.

  1. Open Web Design

Open Web Design is website which shares free web design templates. It is driven by a large group of individuals who actively contributes to the pool of design templates in this website. You can find more than 3,000 design templates at Open Web Design. It also has sub-categories of most popular designs to speed up your search. It also holds design contests for web designers on a regular basis.

  2. OSWD

Open Source Web Design is a collection of free web designs contributed by the community. There are more than 2,000 web design templates for anyone to download free of charge. You can browse or search for templates by color, contrast, validation and other categories.
Francis J. Skettino is the founder of the Open Source Web Design project. Its goal is to help the community by providing beautiful design templates for their blogs, content management systems or businesses. A fantastic resource!

  3. Open Designs

The Open Design Community (TODC) is also another community-driven project where its website designers from all over the world come together to provide thousands of XHTML and CSS-based free web design templates available for download. It’s a great place for web designers to share free website designs and templates, discuss web design and promote their services. Being just more than a year old, it already has 3,600 registered users and more than 1,000 designs listed. It also has a forum where designers share tips and resources.

  4. CSS Tinderbox

Raymond Krause, a web designer and illustrator, set up CSS Tinderbox to provide the public with basic CSS-based web designs. You can browse his designs based on fixed-width or flexible templates. Subsequently you can view tham based on centered box or the number of columns you want (up to 4) on your website. CSS Tinderbox also has a blog which provides useful information that covers basic web design, accessibility and design standards. A great site to check out!

  5. MyHedSpace

MyHedSpace is also another project by an individual by the name of j.e. lontok. He provides free open source web designs for free. However, if you would like his premium templates, you can buy them at less than $30.

  6. ZeroWeb

ZeroWeb.org is another free online resource for webmasters. They provide a selection of free downloads, such as website layouts, web graphics, and clipart. They also provide a couple of free services, such as URL redirection, a guestbook, and a contact form to make webmastering easier. You can browse its website layouts based on clean, heavy, strange and premium designs.

  7. Open Source Templates

Open Source Templates provide free website templates to the public. It contains website templates, not many though, including nature-based website designs for your environmental blog or eco-business. Worth a look!

  8. ThemeBot

At ThemeBot, you can browse website templates based on HTML, Flash, phpBB, WordPress themes, Joomla templates and other categories. ThemeBot makes browsing for a website template a pleasant experience! Check it out!

There are definitely more open source website directories I have not mentioned in this list. The list is not meant to be conclusive. Nevertheless, it is hoped that web designers would find them useful and interesting.
