When you write for a content writing site you have to think about what keywords or tags you will put at the bottom of your article so that search engines can index your page and people can search and find your article. Even when you are submitting your article link to social bookmarking sites you have to submit tags as well. Do you know that Google has a tool that helps you choose the most profitable keywords and even estimates the daily and monthly traffic associated with those keywords? Do you know that this Google Adwords Keyword Tool also estimates whether there is too much competition for a certain keyword or not? Let us look at the main features of this Google’s keyword tool.
First you have to find Google’s Adwords Keyword Tool. You can find it here
Google AdWords: Keyword Tool or click the link below:
Make sure that “Keywords” is highlighted in green. In the box entitled “Find Keywords” type your keyword. For example, type “google adwords.” Click on “Search” below. You will see five columns opening up. There are other advanced options but we will deal with the first five only.
(1) The Google Adwords Keyword Tool
(a) Keyword
This first column will give you a host of ideas as to what your keyword can be. If you think that thinking up keywords or tags is often a task for you, this column will give you a host of ideas. It will give variations of your own keyword you entered in the search box. If you searched for “Google Adwords” you will see in the first column “google search”, “ad words”, “google analytics”, “google adsense”, ”google keyword tool” etc.
(b) Global and Local Monthly Searches
These two columns deal with how many times people globally and locally enter the respective search term into the search engine. You do not just want to use keywords just because they exist. Use keywords that people are actually searching for. In fact, this implies that you ought to write articles on what people are searching for. To be successful online do not just write about what people need alone. Write about what they want (within reason of course). People have needs and people have wants – wants are often termed perceived needs or felt needs. This column will let you know what people really want to know about. It may be that not many people are interested in your niche topic or maybe you need to change your choice of words to lure more people. With this keyword tool you can click on the heading “Global Monthly Searches” or “Local Monthly Searches” to sort the keywords in order of most searches or least searches. You will see that some keywords have thousands of searches associated with them while others have millions. Needless to say, the ones with millions are the most popular keywords.
(c) Competition
Now you might want to start using the most popular keywords right away. Nothing is wrong with that except for one thing – competition. If you choose only the most popular keywords you will get a lot of competition from other writers, webmasters etc. Mix popular keywords with those that are popular but have less people competing to use it.
The keywords with less green in the box are those with less competition. Click on the heading “Competition” and this will sort the keywords by competition. Make sure you have the keywords with the least competition on top and glance over at the Global and Monthly searches for that keyword. If it has hundreds of thousands of searches monthly and yet has little competition to use it that is a good keyword to use along with the most popular keywords that have a lot of people competing to use them.
A word of caution
You may have noticed that the Keyword Tool does not just use one-word keywords but uses key phrases. Try to use phrases as well as words. That will lessen the competition. If you are searching online for how to get traffic to your content writing articles, the keyword “traffic” will be too vague and will have too much competition as well. When people search they are more detailed than that. Let your phrase stand out as the most relevant one.
(2) The Traffic Estimator
Click on the left under the Keyword Tool. Type in your keyword in the “Get traffic estimates box.” For instance type in the same search term “Google Adwords.” On the far left of your web page you will see under the Traffic Estimator a summary giving the a few details. The one that is most important to us in the scope of this article is called “Total Estimated Clicks”– This is the daily amount of clicks that your selected keyword gets. A range is given here but a more detailed amount can be found in the column on the far right. This tool also gives more advanced details such as “Estimated Avg. CPC (Estimated Average Cost Per Click) and “Estimated Ad Position” etc.
So one of the keys to online success is keywords – keywords that are so popular in that they lure traffic and yet paradoxically not so popular that if you use them your article gets buried on page 3 of the search engines. If thus far you have been “locked out” of page 1, your “keyword” may be at fault.
