Are DVD’s destined to be replaced like VHS?
Last night my old DVD / VCR combo player finally bit the bullet. Only on the DVD side of things. So looking for something to watch I dusted off and popped in and an old VHS tape. To my amazement the outdated technology still worked. But really, the movie I was watching wasn’t that old it didn’t seem.

And it got me thinking. During the previews before the movie was a flashy promotion to start buying DVD’s.
I made the transition from VHS to DVD like I made the transition from cassettes to CD’s. Extremely late. There’s no way they could replace VHS! I had a enormous collection; I didn’t want to have to start amassing discs to replace them. But sure enough, the local video stores eventually put all the old VHS tapes on clearance racks and only offered DVD rentals.

Nowadays when I go to watch a DVD there are the inevitable previews before the movie. And you know what I’ve been seeing? Those flashy promotions saying how much better everything is on Blu-Ray. Another new-fangled technology.
It seems of course like it is inevitable. I know I will eventually make the transition to Blu-Ray, so long as no new technology burst out onto the scene in the meantime.
But how long do we have? Is Blu-Ray legit? How much time do I have?! And then how long will it be before Blu-Ray is replaced and becomes obsolete?

Yes of course Blu Ray is the replacement for the dvd market. But it will be a long time, probably several years before dvds are phased out. Blu Ray is the winner in the next gen format wars. HD DVD tried to win, but failed to make a lot of sales. Don’t give up on your dvds just yet. There will be many new releases on dvd for several years to come, so don’t stress out about it right now!! I still buy dvds only and so do a lot of other people.

I don’t see much of a difference with Blu Ray, except for the cost. What? I’m like you, years in catching up to technology. I still use 3 1/2″ floppies. LOL!
