A look at YouTube HD and my process with it.

As you may have heard, YouTube now offers High Definition videos. For all you video makers or watchers, what does this mean for you? Well, on the surface it would seem like something amazing for everyone. Though, there’s always technical issues involved. Personally, none of the HD videos I’ve tried to upload to YouTube have ever worked. And the few that I’ve seen uploaded in HD have had some jumpy playback.
Sometime in the last week, I was reading on the iMuslim blog, and came across a post called To HD or Not to HD…?. It got me thinking.
I thought I should share the process I personally use with my videos. I personally don’t have an HD camera, but I do have access to one that I borrow very often (probably more than I should). So, I have a few videos in HD. So maybe I should tell you guys my solution to the problem of whether or not to HD.
If you’ve spread your wings and flown all through the internet’s many video sites you might’ve heard of Vimeo. This website is probably my favorite video site. I do believe it was the first site to introduce HD on the web, and it does a great job with it. The upload times are nice and quick(er). The quality is great and it doesn’t make your video conform to a bigger or smaller size. Like YouTube, it allows 720p HD (1280×720) videos.
Now, what I do, with my videos (or at least, what I now plan to do), I wrote on that blog post mentioned earlier:
Personally, I still haven’t been able to fully upload one of my HD videos to YouTube, it always had some error. But, in my experience of viewing HD videos, it hasn’t been very good on YouTube. What I’d do, (and probably what I already do, I think), is post up my videos in regular quality, (which enables the “higher quality” version to be there), and then post a link in the description to the same video in HD on vimeo.com
Vimeo, I believe, was the first site to feature HD videos and I must say, it’s playback and quality is very good. Even if some people have problems viewing the HD version (which doesn’t usually happen), you can easily turn off the HD and the quality stays pretty good, even better than YouTube’s “high quality.”
So, that’s my suggestion:
Put up standard videos on YouTube
Provide a link in the description to HD video on Vimeo.com
Yeah, that’s basically my suggestion for anyone who needs this advice. This is just one step for video-makers everywhere. HD is taking over and I definitely love it. We’ve gone from SD to HD, and next, I do truly believe, is 3D.
Anyway, you can find my YouTube videos here, and my Vimeo videos here. Also, if you’re Muslim and you decide to join Vimeo, make me your contact and join the group I made called Muslim Filmmakers (it’s pretty small, for now).
That’s all for now.
