Would Life be Better Without Social Networking Sites?

Social Networks

What about the days before MySpace and Facebook.

I’m sure most of you have visited or are even members of a social networking website, whether it is Bebo, MySpace, Vampirefreaks, Facebook or another site. It’s popular now among most people to be a member of one and is used to contact people as well as phone numbers and e-mails. But the downside is that people spend so much of their time online, that no-one goes out as much.

I’m young so I don’t have much memory of life before the internet was popular. But I would love to see the day where people didn’t include Facebook in general conversation. I wish I didn’t know what MySpace was. I wish I lived in a community where people would meet up in a diner to talk to friends instead of instant messaging. It’s lazy, it gets boring. I miss the days when people still sent letters and postcards to each other. I miss having a penpal on the other side of the world, when nowadays people just e-mail. It’s more exciting receiving a letter or even a phone call. Why has texting and IMing taken over the world with its indirect talking where you don’t even hear a person’s voice or see their face?

MySpace was created in 2003 and Facebook was founded in 2004. Nowadays it is difficult to meet anyone who doesn’t have either one. I’m almost disappointed at that thought.

Social networking sites seems to be a person’s own bulletin board where they can let anyone know what they are currently doing or what they want everyone to know. What happened to personal actually meaning personal? What happened to mystery and everyone living their own lives, instead of relying on others’ opinion on things. If I’m in a shitty mood, should I cry, dig in to a pint of ice-cream and watch my favourite TV show reruns? Or should I go modern and share the most depressing lyrics I can find on my status. Or maybe I’ll just put a “</3″ if I feel like being “mysterious” and trying to get people to leave me a comment saying “wots wrong?”.

It’s silly really.
