Why Twitter Is So Popular?

Social Networks

Well it’s a question we really ask ourselves when we start to use twitter. Then Why do these many spend their time tweeting? let’s see.

Twitter is an company providing a platform for you to answer a silly question really .. What are you doing right now ? – Well doesn’t it sound annoying. In this web 2.0 world there are mind boggling and sophisticated social networks like facebook, orkut and many more. But put them all together and still you won’t quite reach the popularity level of twitter. Why ?

  • Simple: It is so simple to use that evn a 6 year old can comfortably spend their time without scratching their heads.
  • Fast: Twitter is probably the fastest website I’ve seen. How do they manage it ? They have millions of users and so to get the site running that fast they have a very good network of servers.
  • Big Guns: Of course, If you have ever visited twitter then you might know that. Britney Spears, 50 cents, Tony Hawk, etc. The list is endless.
  • Ad Free: Just imagine how much Twitter could make by placing a single ad on their website. But they don’t and thats where they succeed ( like google dominating yahoo ).
  • Fun: You follow someone, they follow you and before you know it you are friends. You also get a personality of the people you meet by glancing at their profile url. — twitter.com/username –

And you can completely customize the looks and feel of your profile pages. It’s really addictive and don’t spend too much time on it. However it doesn’t apply to me. I’m so fond of tweeting.

A bit like a Big Brother. I don’t have an account with Twitter but I myself find it somehow irritating. All my friends who are calling, texting, IM-ing me with exactly this question: “What are you doing now?” are more than enough. :) Still, I can’t deny that Twitter is a social phenomenon.

Btw, if they don’t have ads, how do they make money? Just curious.
