What Do You Think of Twitter?

At first, after the hype of it all, I was not a big fan of Twitter. Why in the world would I want to know whether someone was “sitting on their couch watching TV?” or “reading the paper?”

But, with time, I’ve opened my mind and attention to it.  I began exploring just who was utilizing Twitter and discovered that almost every top company, celebrity, politician, public figure, etc. in the world has a profile and that made me sit up and take a greater interest.  I mean if the top driving influences in our world are on Twitter, there has to be a good reason for it.  And, this finally made me realize that any avenue that can help further your connection to the world in a safe, manner is a good thing that’s worth your time to explore and benefit from. And, then the light bulb went off. It’s just another great way to gain exposure for all your invaluable writing efforts.

Since that realization, I’ve been consistently adding new twitter-ers to my list I’m following and about 25% add me back. I try to follow only the members that I truly think I’d be interested in based off their names or their brief descriptions. For example, I’m very interested in learning all I can about eco-friendly green living so that’s a huge twitter population I’m focusing on. Plus, the bulk of my writing centers around health, inspiration, romantic poetry and so forth, topics I’m certain will appeal to this socially conscious group of people. It’s important to keep in mind the audience you believe will read your work.

It can be a bit of a slow process since you literally have to add 1 person at a time. But, I do find that the more people you add, the more people who you haven’t added see your profile and add you! That helps make your efforts a bit more balanced. And, over time as your followers grow, so too will the number of people who continue to add you.

But, do you think members will actually click on your links and read your articles. Yes, I wholeheartedly believe that the more you put your work into the world, the more exposure and views they will gain. Just like advertisements on TV, after you see something enough times, suddenly you will subconsciously begin to think about it more and eventually your curiosity will take over and you’ll start to see more and more views for all your work.

It’s a numbers game and it’s simply another strategic avenue to gain increasing viewership.

But what has your experience been? Do you feel Twitter is worth your efforts?

I find Twitter is more just a popularity contest, except for some of the major businesses and artists who utilize it to let people know up and coming events. Some people utilize it for the wrong reasons, while others benefit. Just like most of these social networking sites.

I use twitter as an easy bookmarking tool. Twitter’s power is more leveraged when many associated bookmarking sites like tweetmeme, topsy, etc. are utilized. They give backlinks to your articles that you tweet at twitter. Make sure to use their bookmarklet.
On the other hand I haven’t noticed much benefit in terms of traffic although my profile has a PR4, ~400 followers. But I feel this is because it is a deep network.

I think Twitter is popular because of the celebrity accounts. They made it popular. For the common people it’s just a craze and for their use facebook is far more useful. Anyway… I use twitter for my writing purpose only… and the result is not too bad. Enjoy this article.

I do agree with what you have to say about Twitter. I’m still skeptical if people actually read my stuff on there though. I did write an article about the proclaimers and had them post it on their twitter page too and it gave me a lot of reviews, but it seems that if people don’t re-post your links you don’t get many views from the twitter community. It seems like a waste of time to deal with Twitter most of the time, unless you write about a celebrity or a public figure who then can post it on there page to – then you’re in luck…. Great article, I enjoyed reading it!

I do have a twitter account but I hardly ever log into it. I think blogging every day on my own blog and building up my own writing community is a better investment of my time.

I didn’t notice before but after writing this comment I started seeing twitter in the list of top referring sites on my dashboard on Triond. Unbelievable but it showed me Twitter has the potential to send direct traffic to our articles. I am going to do a special experiment on twitter traffic soon or next month. I will share the results here.

  14. I’ve been avoiding Twitter, but after reading this maybe I’ll have to check it out myself. Thanks for the insights.
