Why we need to stop letting celebrity lifestyles rule our world.
Children these days often grow up wishing to be rich and famous. The rich side of the wish I can understand, to not have money worries, and to be able to go anywhere you want, anytime, at any cost is a luxury which the vast majority of the worlds population will never be lucky enough to experience.
One thing I don’t quite understand, however, is the wish to be famous.
In today’s world, if you are famous, you are a celebrity, and if you are a celebrity, all your rights to live a private life have virtually vanished. For example: Britney Spears, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, David Beckham, Madonna and almost all other musicans and film stars… These people are followed by the papparazzi each and every day, their trips to the local supermarket are photographed and displayed in newspapers and magazines, often with some smug comment about a zit they may have, or a handbag that went out of fashion three weeks ago.
You can argue with the likes of David Beckham, that if it wasn’t for the fame and publicity, he would not have the riches available to him that he does today, however, I’m sure that if he could, he would love to chance to trade some of the cash he has earnt for some private time with his family, without being written about by press all over the world.
The worrying thing is, this celebrity obsessed culture that has taken over the world will only continue to grow. Pretty soon the World News will not be about the things that matter, but they’ll be about popstars hairstyles, and Hollywood actresses being spotted getting out of a cab with laddered tights. How dare she!!
Certain ‘celebrities’, namely Paris Hilton thrive on the opportunity to cash in and feel loved by the celebrity obsessed public. It is also beneficial for the likes of Jack and Kelly Osbourne, and Pixie Geldoff. These people would never have been heard of if it wasn’t for their parents, however they are now recognised names, and their progress in life can be followed weekly in glossy magazines, and worse still, Twitter!
I’m a member of Facebook, and I joined up to get into contact with old school and college friends, as well as old work colleagues. I personally think that Facebook is an excellent idea, and so do 200 million others, obviously. I don’t agree with people spending their life on Facebook, and informing everyone of their ’status’ every 20 minutes, I think that’s pretty sad, it’s far less sad though, than just the thought of Twitter.
Twitter is Celebrity Obsession Gone Mad! At this current point in time, people are logging on to the internet to ‘follow’ celebrities in their everyday routines, and worst of all, the ‘celebrities’ are playing along! It’s no wonder the world has so many fat, obese, unhealthy people when they spend all their time ‘following’ their ‘idol’ whilst chomping on a cheeseburger – because Russel Crowe was snapped in the morning papers eating one.
My girlfriend and I are currently expecting our first child, it’s due in December and this time next week we’ll find out the sex. I’m so excited about it, and I can’t wait. December can’t come quick enough! Both hers and my parents cannot wait, neither can her sisters, or my brothers. They call almost each day, either round to the house or on the phone, to see how we’re getting on, and more importantly see how she is feeling, and we tell them. This is because all the people I’ve mentioned care, they know us personally, and want us to be ok. Would you be interested in me starting a ‘blog’ to inform you each day how my day at work was, and also how my girlfriend is feeling each day…? No…? Thought not…
However, if I was Zac Effron, and my celebritiy girlfriend was pregnant, it would be ‘followed’ in the media every day, it would also be followed on Twitter and crazy people with nothing better to do.
The world is changing and there is so much for everyone to do. Get outside and kick a ball around, play catch, ride a bike, play an instrument.. do anything… apart from continue with the pathetic ‘following’ of other peoples lives, the constant voyeurism, the Reality TV shows, Twitter, magazines.. the list goes on!
These people eat, like we do. These people drink, like we do. These people still go to the toilet, like we do. And they wake up with hair all over the place and looking their worst, like we do.
The point I’m making is that these ‘celebrities’ are just people. They are no better than the man walking down the street. So why do we let them rule our world?
For the sake of our children, and our children’s children, the whole world needs to stop the sadness and get a life!
